Sarah Hollendon
« on: Saturday 17 February 07 11:48 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I ordered the birth certificate of my Great Grandfather, to try to find out my Great Great Grandmothers surname. She is shown as Sarah Hollendon. Now, I have looked at the usual places, and cannot find ANY hollendons in Oxfordshire at all. She is listed on one of the census's (Once she had already married) as being born in Russells Water, Oxfordshire.

Anyone know where I can look to try to find out some more online? The LDS website doesn't list ANY Hollendons!

Do you have a Hollendon in your past?

Thankyou for any help,

Best Wishes

x

Hi Tease,

Can you tell us a little more about her? Where and when was she born?  :)
(could you give us a census reference?)

Hi Tati,

Well, depending on which Census you listen to, she was born between 1803 & 1809. She is shown as Russells Water, Oxfordshire on the 1861 census.

Sorry, don't know how to give you a Census Reference? Where would I find that?

Thankyou

Hi

I have just had a look at the Oxfordshire marriage index - and you are quite correct there are no Hollendons - the closest I can come up with in that sort of area (Russells Water is part of either Watlington or Pishill parish) is Holliman - with all sorts of variations on the spelling

Yep that's it - no problem, Tease  :) I think I have found her as Sarah Austin.
I notice the 1851 census has her as being born in Ruscombe Berkshire.
(but she was born 'out' of county in 1841)

I was hoping for her marriage to have occurred after the start of civil registration but unfortunately their eldest child is 8 in 1841  :-\

Thankyou so much for looking!

Yes, in 1851, she is shown as Ruscombe, but they all are, so I hoped that was a mistake.

I guess a trip to the records office is my only hope of working it out.

It is pretty ropey writing on the certificate though. Am I right to think it is Hollendon? I'll scan it in, hang on.......
