I'm in agreement with Debbie - Hollenden seems to be one of those names that clerks make up when they're not sure what they've heard!!    ::)

I've checked Pishill baptisms and the nearest name I can find is Hollis, which I don't think could be mistaken for Hollenden?  ???

On the IGI, there is a Sarah Holland baptised 19.4.1807 in Ewelme, daughter of John and Elizabeth. Ewelme is only about 4 miles from Russells Water.

Jill

Just seen you've posted the certificate so will have a look at the name now.
HELP!!!

 BATHSHEBA BOOTHROYD bn c. 1802 W. Yorks.

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

Hollendor?? Sounds like something from Lord of the Rings!

Goodness, getting this certificate was supposed to help, not pose loads of other questions!

Thankyou all so much for looking for me, you are all so kind!

Ok - this is just a theory, but I just had a look at the familys living in Russells Water in 1851 and there is a fairly large family of HOLLANDS headed by a Robert aged 42 born Swincombe (I have just found that part of Russels Water is in Swincombe) with his father William still alive and in the household aged 77 also born Swyncombe.  I checked the registers for Swyncome and there is a baptism for a Sarah d/o William & Ann Holland May 20th 1804.  Do you think the registra has added an extra er to the end of the name on the birth by mistake or mishearing ?

Just an idea

I am willing to accept any theory on this right now, thankyou!

How can I find out for sure? I guess I need to check the marriage records for Ruscombe to see if they married there. Sarah and her husband John Austin had all their children there, and stayed there for the rest of their lives, so I guess it is a possibility that they married there first.

My Grandmothers parents were first cousins, so the John whose BC is above (my Great Grandfather), also had a sister, Ann that ended up being my Great Grandmother. I suppose if I can find the GRO ref for her birth in about 1841 then I could see what Sarahs maiden name was writtern like then?

Grasping at straws I know!

Is there anywhere online where I can check the Ruscombe Parish Records, or do I need to hop over to the RO?

Thankyou again,

xx

I can't find anywhere on-line where you can check those registers - they are not on the IGI or the BVRI.  I checked the Berks fam Hist soc site and they don't seem to have published them.  Sometimes the larger local libraries carry copies of registers for their immeadiate area, other than that then yes your best bet would be the records office - I think they have a copy of the Berks marriage index there so if it isn't in Rushcombe you could possibly have a look at that.  I note that John seems to have bee born in Wraysbury which is actually in Bucks though

There is an infant Henry Hollender buried in Wokingham in 1844 - from the workhouse. In over 1.5 million names from Berks this is the only Hollender, Hollenden etc.  Could be Sarah's child from her first marriage.
