Hi Kimmy

I've checked the 1861 & 71 census:

1861 Census, Cornwall, Mabe
Class: RG9; Piece: 1568; Folio: 27; Page: 10;
John Bowden, Head, Mar, 30, Ag Lab, b. Cornwall, Constantine
Eliza Bowden, Wife, Mar, 34, Cornwall, Constantine
Eliza Jane Bowden, 8, Cornwall, Maw*
Caroline Bowden, 6, Cornwall, Mabe
John Henry Bowden, 5, Cornwall, Mabe
Elizabeth Bowden, 2, Cornwall, Mabe
Sarah Collings, 17, General Serv

1871 Census, Cornwall, Mabe
Class: RG10; Piece: 2298; Folio: 78; Page: 9;
John Bowden, Head, Mar, 40, Farmer of 60 acres, b. Cornwall, Constantine
Sarah Bowden, Wife, Mar, 27, Cornwall,
Caroline Bowden, 16, UnM, Farmers daughter, Cornwall, Mabe
John H Bowden, 15, Farmers son, Cornwall, Mabe
Elizabeth Bowden, 12, Scholar, Cornwall, Mabe
William Bowden, 5, Cornwall, Mabe
Arthur Bowden, 3, Cornwall, Constantine
James Bowden, 2mo, Cornwall, Constantine

It looks like his first wife probably died and he re-married.
Will check the deaths and marriages and get back to you.

Hi Kimmy

I checked FreeBMD:

The are 2 Eliza Bowden deaths
1861 Jun qtr, Falmouth, Vol 5c, P140
1863 Jun qtr, Redruth, Vol 5c, P206

and numerous Elizabeth Bowden deaths between 1861 & 71 for Cornwall.

Doing a search for Marriages for John Bowden & Sarah * in Cornwall for that period, I found:
Mar qtr 1867, Helston, Vol 5c, P293
John BOWDEN & Sarah CALAGAN

Was your John Henry Bowden married when he arrived in Australia as there are 3 marriages for John Henry Bowden between 1873 & 1879?

Hope this helps.

Bren

Hi Bren,
thank you for your reply.
My John Henry left England and arrived in Australia in July 1880 was married to Annie Kearney 1886.
he was my Grandfatrer but I never knew him as he died in 1922.
It looks as though Eliza died and John married again.
I don't know if any members of the family came to australia.

Kimmy1
I am also researching the Lelliott family in Sussex.

Hi
Jack Bowden has his service record digitised on NAA. He was an Engine Driver and his Father is his Next of Kin [John Henry].
