David, I just thought I would let you know that I did email  Berks RO and have had a reply from them. The will is with them but as it is on Parchment a photo copy cannot be taken. They do have an external photographic professional who can do this for me. It would cost aprrox £60. so I shall need to wait a while before ordering it. Thanks for your advice and help. Kesannah

The will I think is in a bundle of papers deposited by the Heelas family in 1947.  This bundle consists mainly of deeds and so I am speculating that the will refers to property which eventually belonged to the Heelas family.

Why don't you post a request for someone who goes to the Berks Record Office to have a look at the will for you?  They won't be able to copy it but they might be able to copy down a few vital details and certainly should be able to determine the context in which it is filed.

I found it amongst a number of references transcribed onto a spreadsheet and so cannot be entirely sure but I also know the person (now unfortunately deceased) whose reference it was, was involved in the writing of some articles on the main houses owned by the Heelas family for the local history society.

It is possible to photograph documents in the BRO - though they charge £2 per image for the privilege. Still a lot cheaper than £60 if you can persuade someone to do this for you.

If the will was proved in the Archdeaconry of Berks the BRO will probably have it on fiche - copies 40p a page. Even cheaper (but possibly less legible). Or it could be at Oxfordshire RO (just an example of an RO that doesn't charge for use of cameras.

Thanks David, I was aware that you can photograph in the BRO and of the cost, it apparently would be more difficult to understand (legibity). I did post a message on the look up request of the Berks board and got a reply from Newburychap to say there is a will for Nicholas Hide on the Wiltshire wills site. Unfortunately when I put the ref no in it returns no matches. I do not know what I am doing wrong so have asked him if he can elaborate.   It appears that I could download the will for free. My reference number is to the Heelas files.  You will have to search from scratch in the Wiltshire list unless Newburychap gave you a reference.

I don't know if you have been onto A2A, but on there in the Berks Records Office, I see they have papers concerning Nicholas Hyde,

Grant of property date 1516
Grant of tenement and garden in Castle Street, date 1518
Lease for 30 years of tenements in Castle Street and Old Street date 1520
ALSO
I don't know if this is anything to do with your Hydes
Grant of an acre of meadow in Fobney allotted yearly date 1379 witnesses ........John atte Hyde
There is also mention of Robert atte Hyde of Reading, tanner, in 1392
and
Grant by William Wylton' of Reading and his wife Joan to John atte Hyde and his wife Margaret, of Tilehurst in 1402
