Lancashire Regiment - Boer War/WW1
« on: Tuesday 23 November 04 10:59 GMT (UK) »
I have hoofed about the net a bit and found some info about the regiment itself - history etc. but cannot find a list  of names of those who served.  Is this possible online? or is there a paper resource one can consult?

Any hint/help in the right direction appreciated.

For those that survived WW1 - the likelihood of finding service records is pretty dim:

http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/researchguidesindex.asp

If your research concerns family members, it might be worth your while contacting the main local library for the area in which they were living at the time to see what info, if any, they hold on local soldiers.  Details of enlistments were often published in the local newspapers - local workplaces, schools etc. often kept information on employees and pupils, again sometimes published in the local newspapers.

For war graves/memorials see:  http://www.cwgc.org

Don't know if this helps as not sure exactly what you are looking for - you won't find complete lists of enlistment for a particular regiment WW1 as far as I am aware.

Thanks.  Knew it wouldn't be easy, just didn't know where to start as never done any military research before.

Cheers

Forgot to mention - probably the most complete record of WW1 soldiers is the medal rolls:

http://www.documentsonline.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Paying for the actual image probably might not give you much more info than what is in the index but will give medals awarded.

If you soldier was promoted or received any meritous awards then it is probably worthwhile consulting the archive of the London Gazette - fortunately online - though easier if it wasn't a common name.  I found my gt grandfather received the Military Medal via this link!

http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/index.asp?webType=0

A tip - if you've not used this before - full names are not always given - sometimes initials only - and sometimes as SMITH A A etc..  and regiments are sometimes abbreviated.

Good Luck

I am interested also in lists of those who served in Boer War, especially Royal Irish Rifles so I was drawn to item.  I agree with Annie's recommendation. Through this site you can access shipping lists of regiments going to and returning from South Africa. There are however, no lists of those serving in regiments although you will find names of officers and some others. It is a tremendous source for getting dates and ships for individual regiments.
