adoption records for ireland?
« on: Wednesday 14 February 07 00:32 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know how I would go about finding adoption records and information on biological parents for a person born in dublin (according to the birth certificate) for 1939?  I have the birth certificate but it gives the names of the father and mother but not the dob's so I can't trace them.  As the surnames were ryan it is so common that I cant find anything and also the address of the father given in the UK doesn't seem to exist.  Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where I can find more information on biological parents (my maternal grandparents).  Thanks for your help.

Hi Marn,

I have just read your message with interest as i am in the same boat as you are. I don't know how to go about tracing birth parents from Ireland. As you say you have a name on the birth certificate but no date of birth. I rang the General Office Register in Dublin today but had no luck without a date of birth. Does anyone have any ideas plz?

Thanks JanieJay

Hello marn and JanieJay,

The Adoption Authority of Ireland will assist adopted people, parents who have placed children for adoption, adoptive parents, and natural family members of people placed for adoption. I'm sorry I'm unable to give you contact names as I've not been in touch with the Board in Dublin but if you'd feel more comfortable having a contact name and would like me to make a phone call to get more information for you please let me know. As mentioned on the website the number of adopted people and natural parents seeking adoption information or trying to trace relatives has increased dramatically in recent years. I replied to three such queries today from Northern Ireland people and was able to point them in the right direction as I have contact names for the Adoption Support Team based in Belfast.

The Barnardos Adoption Advice Centre is at Christchurch Square, Dublin 8, Republic of Ireland. Barnardos runs a confidential phone line for adoptees from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thurs and Fris, and 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Tues. Phone: 011 353 1 454-6388. This organisation would tend to deal more with orphans who were adopted but they'd probably be able to assist if approached for advice.

All the Best,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply to my query. I have tried making contact with the Catholic Adoption Society in England, but they were unable to help me. I have tried to make contact with the Adoption Authority in Ireland and not got very far. So if you could help with a contact name or number that would be great.

The difficult twist in mine is that my birthmother is Irish and still lives in Ireland but i was adopted in England. I know her maiden name and approx age. Just really want to know how and if i can trace her as she married and i don't know when or to who she got married. I would be gratefull for anymore ideas.

Thanks JanieJay

Hi JanieJay,

AdoptionIreland.com is the website of the Adopted People's Association in Ireland. It looks as though it would be worthwhile contacting them. This organisation has a free, voluntary, mutual consent reunion registry where you can register your details in the hope that someone is searching for you or search the Register to see if someone is waiting to be found by you. The Register is extremely successful and attracts over 1,000 new registrations every year.

All the Best,

Chris

Hello JanieJay,

I've been looking at another query about a possible adoption in Ireland and came across Tracing your birth family on the Public Information Service citizeninformation.ie site which is provided by the Citizens Information Board in Ireland. It might contain some information which may assist in your search. http://tinyurl.com/4pkqga

You have her maiden name, approx d.o.b, have you any idea of her address? If she married then it would probably be at local church, maybe check their records?
