Where is Houghton Wood, Surrey?!
« on: Tuesday 13 February 07 10:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello all you Surrey folk!

I wonder of you may be able to suggest a location for the birth of one of my ancestors?

According to the 1851 census, Abner Everett was a paper mill worker in Rickmansworth, born in (what looks like) Houghton Wood, Surrey, but I can't locate this at all on any map I have looked at.

Fortunately, there don't seem to be many Abner Everett's (sometimes spelt Everitt/Evrett) about, and there's a good chance he is the Abner Everett on the 1841 census shown as a labourer in Merstham, Surrey, and the one baptised in Caterham in 1825.

Any ideas anyone?  ::)

Kind Regards

Hi Hamandpineapple

Can you post the reference for the 1851 census return.  Ancestry is not playing ball and I can't find him anywhere and I would like to have a look so that I can see if I can help.

Have you considered that as the 1851 census took place in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, that the enumerator may have misunderstood Abner’s accent and wrote down an incorrect birth location.

It seems from your earlier posts that Abner was born in the Caterham, Merstham district and if he is the one on the IGI (1825), then you may get more information by actually checking the baptism entry in the parish records. In some cases (but not all) the church minister has entered the father’s occupation and/or the place, road, farm the family lived. Unfortunately, this really depends on the minister, as to what level on information was provided.

Hello Ham and Pineapple

How about Holmwood in Surrey, if you say that in an accent it sounds a bit like Houghton Wood?

Good luck with your research
