William Morrell LAMB, born 1818, farmer, of Pannal/Arthington
« on: Monday 12 February 07 14:09 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to map out the family of William Morrell LAMB, born 1818 in Pannal, who had a farm in Arthington.

He was the son of Thomas and Charlotte (MORRELL) LAMB, christened in Pannal 11 Oct 1818.

I have his 1861 and 1881 Census entries:

----
1861 UK Census
h. Bankside Farm, Arthington, Yorkshire
William LAMB; Head; b1819 Pannal, Yorkshire; farmer
Hannah LAMB; Wife; b1829 Atherington
Sarah A LAMB; Dau; b1858 Atherington
Thomas LAMB; Son; b1859 Atherington
Plus 3 servants.
----
----
1881 UK Census
h. Bank Side Farm, Arthington, Yorkshire
William M. LAMB; Head; 62; b. Pannal, York; Farmer Of 97 Acres Employing 2 Men
Hannah LAMB; Wife; 52; b. Arthington, York; Farmers Wife
Sarah A. LAMB; Dau; U; 23; b. Arthington, York; Farmers Dau
Thomas LAMB; Son; U; 22; b. Arthington, York; Farmers Son
Margaret LAMB; Dau; U; 19; b. Arthington, York; Farmers Dau Schoolmistress Assist
Mary LAMB; Dau; U; 14; b. Arthington, York; Farmers Dau Scholar
George GREAVES; Servant; U; 17; b. Kirby, York; Farm Servant Indoor
----

Hannah INGHAM was William's second wife - they married in 1856 - I'm not sure what his first wife's name was. Also, I'm not sure if the Arthington farm was in Hannah's family or in his, so he may not be in Arthington in 1841 and 1851.

I also don't think this William LAMB was the same one who had a farm at Rawden.

Can anyone find him in 1841, 1851, 1871 - and maybe 1891?

Thanks - IGS

Thanks - I really appreciate this.

I'm trying to figure out if William LAMB is my ggg-grandfather. Well, I already know A William LAMB is my ggg-grandfather, but I have yet to figure out WHICH William LAMB and it's really frustrating.

All I know is that my gg-grandfather George LAMB was born c.1838-1842 in Hunslet (or Leeds) and his father (according to George's 1862 marriage certificate) was William LAMB, farmer. But I haven't found George in 1841 or 1851- his first appearance that I've been able to find is 1861 in Newton Heath, Lancashire (he was a striker/boiler maker and remained in Lancashire except for a short period when he was back in Hunslet where his son was born in 1865).

I inquired of the Leeds Registrar if the George LAMB born in 1838 was the son of William, but he was not. Perhaps my George was illegitimate and no proper certificate or baptismal record survives - and perhaps he went by his mother's surname in 1841 and 1851....

As William Blake said:

Little lamb, who made thee?
Dost thou know who made thee...
