3rd Foot Guards
« on: Sunday 11 February 07 22:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  Can anyone help me with any informatiom re;
Benjamin Suggitt,  he was in the 3rd Foot Guards  about 1800 to 1814   he was listed as a sodier living in
Arrow Alley in Portsoken Ward of London,   I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this regiment or how I could find any records, would be interesting to know if he was based in London or went overseas, & what war would have been going on at that time.
I believe the 3rd Foot Guards were formed primarily from the Scot's Guards,

3rd Foot Guards & Scots Guards are one and the same regiment.

1800-1814 was all about the Napoleonic Wars
1st Battn, 3rd Foot Guards were in Egypt, north Germany, Denmark, Portugal & Spain during this period as well England

2nd Battn fought in Holland, Portugal, Spain and the Waterloo campaign in 1815

hi clare
my 4xgreatgrandfathers brother served in the 3rd foot coldstream guards during the same period
i got his  service record from the national archives
this gives such information as
age, birthplace
pyhsical description, hieght hair eyes complexion
trade or proffesion
days served in a particular rank
places of service
demob details
and pension details
mine also states that they served in india gibraltar and malta
my ancester sgt george vardy was wounded at talavera
in 1809
there is a good account of the actions of the guards in this batle
in a new book called TALAVERA wellingtons early pennisula
victories 1808-09by peter edwards  published by www.crowood.com priced at 19.95 , think i got mine from
waterstones
its a very interesting read full of information
one passage of interest is that between 1827/30
the goverment sent letters to all former soldiers asking were they served what battles they fought ,if they were wounded etc
i presume that these would be held at the national archives
either in his service record or seperatly
i havnt one for george as he died feb 1827
i hope this is of some help
best regards gig

Hello Jenny,I am researching the Foot Guards at the moment,at TNA.I will have a look for you  on my next visit, although I can not find any records for the gentleman atm.
Portsoken Street is just north of the Tower of London,so he may of been based there
It will be end of March before I can give you any information.
