Mortlach Cemetery - Hugh Mitchell Morren - COMPLETED WITH THANKS
« on: Sunday 11 February 07 15:43 GMT (UK) »
Does anybody know Mortlach Cemetery.

I am hoping to find the grave of Hugh Mitchell Morren on my next visit to the area.  He is buried in Mortlach Cemetery along with other members of his family.

Would you advise me to find out exactly where the grave is before I visit.

He died in 1896 although Libindx have a Hugh having died in 1856.

Thanks

Betty

Hi Betty,
I know the cemetery pretty well...I have lots of relatives, including my dad and all of my grandparents, buried there and have been visiting it since I was a child.
It is rather large so it might be best to have a plan with you when you go.

Contact - heritage(at)moray.gov.uk  Ms Heron there is very helpful - she photocopied the part of the cemetery plan (it's too large to copy all on one sheet) that I needed to find some of my families graves. She also gave me the inscriptions and all this only cost a couple of  pounds.

The old cemetery is on two levels and I think that the stone that you are looking for is on the upper part, to the right of the main entrance but it would be best to see the plan.

Hi Elaine

Thanks for your reply.

The cemetery sounds a bit bigger than I was expecting.

They are very helpful at Libindx.  On our last visit to Elgin we spent about two days getting information together.  Then another day at least going round cemeteries.  We had not done any research on this side of the family when we were last up.

Thanks again
Betty

Yes, def take a plan of the cemetery with you when visiting Mortlach - it is huge.  And, if you go in the summer months, watch out for the bees!  I went with no plan and ended up spending nearly all day to find my ancestors all the while ducking and weaving about to avoid the dive bombing bees.

Thanks for that.

I managed to vist the cemetery last year.  It took me two goes and a long walk round the cemetery before I was successful.

We were late in the year so missed the bees, thankfully.  There were plenty of signs of rabbits.

Thanks for getting in touch
