MMmm.., Yes Trish,
I think he is probably the youngest lying enlistee [if our facts and figures are correct] that I have come across.  He seems to be 16 and a few months.   As you say both parents signed. Amazing.
'Poor physique' they noted.  Well only a pup after all.
Seems to have been a bigger man inside!!

Thank you all for the very interesting information and the birth dates of the last two sons confirms my estimate of the dates of arrival in Australia. On the IGI they are shown as being born in the UK which does not gel with some of the NAA archive material.

I hope this is OK but I will try to answer your questions all in one place rather than individual responses.

1) Children of Louis. I have just been contacted through GReunited by a relative of Louis George who has supplied quite a lot of information on that branch of the family. He married a Francis Rosa Agnes Willmot (d1919 QLD) but where and when I do not know. They had 4 sons and 4 daughters, the eldest born in 1893 in Brisbane.

2) Walter Cornelius senior was born in Croydon Surrey in 1879 and died in Hemmant 28/05/1949. His parents are Louis and Elizabeth (the main subjects of this post). Walter and Elizabeth had a son Walter Cornelius b 29/08/1898 d 16/08/1989 Redcliffe. The digital record I found which refers to him in the NAA shows him living at Armstrong Road Cannon Hill Brisbane. He is a Private in the 14th Australian Field Ambulance No. 13584. The document is dated 26/11/1942 and relates to the loss of a discharged returned soldier's badge in Moreton Bay.

3) Archibald Vincent b 26/12/1891 Lambeth London is the son of William Alfred Acworth and Elizabeth Beiley (refer to Trish's BMD information). William is the brother of Louis Joseph. As I said in my original post, I am not sure if William travelled with Louis Joseph or arrived as part of a second wave. The IGI gives marriage date as 'about 1889' in London, so I suspect he arrived later.

4) William Snowden is also the son of William Alfred and Elizabeth Beiley. I suspect that the first NOK was his father, the second maybe his wife.

I hope this information has not muddied the waters and thanks again for all the help.

Hi Clive

Re No 2 - you might like to double check the naa record - I think you have only looked at the first page - there is much more available including his enlistment form, service details  and details of his military medal (I think there were about 27 pages - some are duplicates)

Here are some other BDM records that may be useful (including the marriage of Louis to Francis Rosa)

Evelyn Rosina Lily Acworth married Josiah Chamberlain 20 Jan 1890 1890/002026
William Alfred Acworth M Elizabeth Jackson Bashford 21 Oct 1890 1890/B014488
Walter Cornelius Acworth M Elizabeth Wands 4 Jul 1898 1898/B019352
Louis George Acworth M Frances Rosa Agnes Willmot 27 Mar 1899 1899/B019848

Not sure if you know - the B in the reg number indicates Brisbane

Hello

Thank you for that wealth of information. I must admit that I had not noticed the subsequent pages of the NAA archive - every day something new.

Trish

Could a reason for this be in one of your earlier messages:

Archibald Vincent ACWORTH William Alfred  Elizabeth Jacson Beley late bashford 26 Dec 1891 1892/049838

Maybe her maiden name was Beiley (or Beley or Bailey) but she married with the name of Bashford (widowed perhaps?)

Just a thought..

Hi Clive,

I've got some information for you from the Queensland State Archives. I hope it all makes sense.

From the immigration books:

ACKWORTH
ship: Almora
arrived: 22 Sept 1886
IMM/121, p347 & 348, film Z1963

Alice age 11
Arthur 2
Clara 4
George 9
Lewis J 32
Lilly 32
Walter 6
William Inf

from the film I discovered that Lewis J was a plumber and all the family came from Surrey.

ACWORTH
ship: Duke of Buccleuch
arr: 23 Sept 1885
IMM/120, p324, film Z1962

Alfred William age 19 from Surrey
Edward H 22, general labourer from Kent
Emma 48, from Kent
Eva 11, from Kent
Louis 49, labourer from Kent

BRYANT (are these yours?)
ship: Duke of Westminster
arr: 8 Dec 1884
IMM/119, p306, film Z1961

Elizabeth M age 33
William H age 28

I couldn't see any obvious Bielby's arriving in Brisbane.

From a different film (immigration agents):
Date of arrival of ship Almora Sept 22 1886
Date of departure from depot Sept 24
Louis Ackworth and family (note spelling Louis rather than Lewis)
In the column headed "whether under management" is written "friends" and "address" is Toowong. So it appears that the family are either visiting or staying with friends in Toowong (a Brisbane suburb)

Duke of Buccleuch arrived Sept 24 1888, departed depot Sept 25.
Louis Acworth
In the column headed "whether under management" is written "work", and in the column headed "name and address of person by whom engaged" is simply written Toowong.

That's all the information so far. Let me know if you'd like more. For example, I didn't look at the film to see the Bryants, and I did not search thoroughly for Bielbys (just had a look at the immigration books). It's no trouble if you need anything else looked up.

I did have a look for wills/intestacies for Louis d 1890 and Elizabeth d 1937, but could find nothing I'm afraid. (I didn't take any other death dates with me).

Hope this helps you in your search. Good luck.
