ACWORTH to Australia (Brisbane) 1886-1888
« on: Sunday 11 February 07 11:30 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am looking to find any information on the Acworth family who emigrated to Australia between 1886 and 1888. They settled in Brisbane but I do not know the port of arrival. Their last residence in the UK was in the London area.

The family was Louis Acworth b1853 (burial date 01/04/1890 Brisbane), wife Elizabeth Maud nee Bryant b1851 (burial date 31/12/1937 Brisbane) and children: Alice, Louis, Walter, Clare, Arthur and William. Two children were born in Brisbane: Edwin in 1888 and Louis in 1890.

As I have discovered military service records, it is possible that Louis travelled with his brother William Alfred and wife Elizabeth nee Beiley, although it is also possible that they may have joined them later.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi Barnford,
I am going to the Qld State Archives this week. Would you like me to look up the immigration records to see if your family arrived in Queensland?

That would be fabulous if you are sure it is not too much trouble.

Thanks

Hi Barnford

If there are records of the family arriving in Brisbane I am sure Ruskie will find them  :)

I'm not sure if you have the death date for Louis viz 1 April 1890 ref 1890/B022909  parents Louis Acworth and Emma Abbott

Births
Edwin Josiah ACWORTH Louis Joseph Elizabeth Maud Bryant 11 Oct 1888 1888/B042365
Louis Joseph ACWORTH Parents Louis Joseph and Elizabeth Bryant 2 Sep 1890 1890/B046862

There are no further deaths for Acworth to 1914.

A death certificate should give age and birth location, details of marriage and children, time in Australia (each state) and burial information (which you have found).

There are a large number of children born to William Alfred and Elizabeth Jackson Beley

Archibald Vincent ACWORTH William Alfred  Elizabeth Jacson Beley late bashford 26 Dec 1891 1892/049838
Eirene Mabel ACWORTH William Alfred  Elizabeth Jacson Beley 13 Jul 1898 1898/B062803
Elizabeth Alice ACWORTH William Alfred  Elizabeth Jacson Beley 8 Jun 1903 1903/B006988
Elsie Mildred ACWORTH William Alfred  Elizabeth Jacson Beley 4 Feb 1896 1896/B058055
Florence May ACWORTH William Alfred  Elizabeth Jacson Beley 9 Jan 1901 1901/B002366
Rosina Violette ACWORTH William Alfred  Elizabeth Jacson Beley lat Bashford 23 Aug 1890 1890/B046856
William Snowdon ACWORTH William Alfred  Elizabeth Jacson Beley late Bashford 28 Sep 1893 1893/B053497

Trish

There are also a number of marriages - probably children of Louis - let me know if you would like details of same

Hi
The miliatary records you have seen.
Do you mean those from National Archives australia?

The digitised records ca be good for finding a spouse or death date sometimes.
In your Acworth case I am puzzled by the record of Walter Cornelius. Is he yours?[parents Louis and Elizabeth]
He states his birth date as 1898 and you have Louis' burial at 1890.  Actually when you add up his stated age of 19 looks more like 1896.
He states his mother as NExt of Kin Elizabeth

He was a great hero anyway especially considering his young age and got a medal

Also see that Archibald Vincent states his mother as NOK when he enlists in 1916  and he lives with her.

He died 13/3/1957.

William Snowden enlists  in AIF 1916 but he lists father William as NOK
On his second enlistment for ww2, it is Ivy Acworth.

Hi Sue

There is a marriage for Walter Cornelius 4 July 1898 to Elizabeth Wands and then they had 9 children, including Walter Cornelius born 29 Aug 1898 - so this may be where the confusion comes from  (It seems he added 2 years to his age - 19yrs 2 months on 25 Oct 1915).

Isn't that amazing.
There was a strict rule in that family.
you may only marry Elizabeth!!

Was Walter Cornelius the  the son of Louis and Elizabeth?

I know the age thing was extraordinary and his recommendation for valour says
"Youth of poor physique"

so brave

I would assume so - Barnford mentions a Walter - but there is no death record to 1914. He had a child in 1913, and perhaps more - no death to 1914.

As you noted in his recommendation for the mm  "although a youth of poor physique" - someone no doubt knew that he was younger than stated!

Trish

PS I find it so sad that we sent so many of our young men off to war - his parents signed a permission slip! They surely knew when he was born (unless he was registered 2 years after his birth - I guess if they married later this is possible  ???)
