George Pease
« on: Sunday 11 February 07 04:34 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to locate any information about my 3 x Great Grandfather George Pease.  He immigrated to Canada in 1835.  His birthyear is 1814 give or take a year.  I have a copy of a letter sent by the son in law of his eldest sister, Mary Graham (nee Pease) from May 1872.  The return letter address is 5 Blackwellgate,  Darlington, England.  The letter writter's name is T.T. Sedgwick.  A grocer and wine merchant.  Mary Graham's residence was in Aldbrough, Darlington, England.  Her husband's name was John.  A picture of Mary was included with the letter.  The picture was the from studio of D. Stevenson, Photographer, Darlington.  The letter also mentions that George's parents had been dead some years but that there was two sons and three daughters still living all with considerable offspring.

George's other siblings names may have been, John Pease of the Bank of England, Newcastle Upon Tyne.  Henry Pease a farmer and Sarah Merryweather a farmers wife.  Their residence was unknown as documented in an unknown note from a member of the family in Canada.

Unfortunately I am working with copies of letters that are slightly torn and worn which makes some of the wording a little hard to read.  I am living in Western Canada and George lived and Eastern Canada.  Only my Great Grandfather came west.  There is no one alive to help me with my questions of English origin.

My research in Canada has been successful for events that have happened in Canada.  I am persistant and want to continue the searching in England.  I have contacted some records offices etc. from the Durham area but I am not making any solid connections.  Maybe George was not his name.  Maybe it was a second name or alias.  He did not make any contact with his family after he left England.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give me.

Dawn

Hi Dawn,
For starters, TT appears to be Thomas Taylor Sedgwick living at 5 Blackwellgate, grocer and town councillor, aged 37 or 57, in 1881 (can't find the address on the census in 1871). RG11/4887/f41

His wife is Hannah Sedgwick, 38, b Aldbrough. FreeBMD gives the marriage of Thomas Taylor Sedgwick and Hannah Graham in Dec 1869, Richmond 9d 999.

Regards
Rob

This looks like the household in Aldbrough in 1841:

HO107/1247/9/7

All born in county

John Graham, 47
Ann Graham, 45
John Graham, 20
Mary Graham, 22

George Graham, 14
Stephen Graham, 14
Mary Graham, 3 months
Sarah Pease, 11

This would make Mary slightly younger than you think your George is. Mary's marriage certificate will give details of her and George's father. Hard to know whether Sarah Pease is a visitor or living at the address.

George, I happened to see your inquiry and thought I would take a look in Canada.  I found a 1861 Canadian Census[/u]George Pease,: Age 46; Born 1815; Birthplace: England; Marital Status: Married, Home in 1861: Location: Richmond, Canada East; Religion: Church of England. George is also listed as being a farmer in Canada East, Quebec.

Canadian Cencus 1851, he evidently participated in a Agricultural Study (same census) and there is a Mary Pease on the next line. Mary born in 1820, England (on what they called a census form). Would that be about right?  I did not see where Mary married name appeared, but am assuming she was the wife of George, as her name was on the next line, but no last name. I am betting that not having the last name on the wifes might suggest a "informal census" or used as information for the area's census.

As for Isabelle Barwick, I am wondering whether or not she may have been connected to my family.
My Barwicks include: William Barwick, father of John Ebenezer Barwick. William Sampson Barwick, John's brother, who was a land speculator and both William and John had a brick and a building business. I also beleve Thomas and Richard Barwick were also my relatives.

Something else caught my eye...under Border Crossings, there was a Isabella Barwick, Fanny Barwick brn. about 1879, and a Elizabeth Barwick, three years old, all sailing together...I believe Fanny and Isabelle were both born abt. 1879 in England and arrived in the US in 1893. The ship that left Liverpool was the S.S. Michigan, under the command of Master S. Walders.

One other thing about Isabella Barwick  Do you have records of your Isabelle Barwick marrying a  a Harry Barwick? Found records for that also.  Hope something clicks with you here.
