Hexthorpe is a place listed among the larger list of placenames on the Yorkshire Genuki page, and it is listed as being in the West Riding. However when I search among the Parishes for the West Riding, there is no such place.Could someone tell me whereabouts it is please?

Actually, I 'googled' it   :-[  It's an area of Doncaster.

It is odd, because if you enter it in the genuki search engine it doesn't exist, but if you enter Doncaster, there it is  ???

William,

I suspect the reason you can't find it on Genuki is because the ecclesiastical parish is, or rather was, Balby with Hexthorpe. Having said that, Genuki doesn't seem to have a separate entry for the parish of Balby either!

This is what the gazetteer says for Balby with Hexthorpe:

Former urban district and parish, West Riding of Yorkshire, on the river Don, since 1914 included in Doncaster; ecclesiastical district St. John the Evangelist, population 8,539 (1951 census), Post Office.
Called Balby.

Hi,

Hexthorpe is right next door to Doncaster town centre, just to the west i guess, over the railway line.
In the photograph below i've circled what is hexthorpe rather crudely in brown. The area marked by the red splodge is 'the plant' as it is know which is what remains of the railway works, wagon building etc buildings. I'm not sure how much of it is still used to be honest but at one point coal and the railways were the major employers of doncaster.
The black dotted line that runs parallel with balby road and urban road is the railway line and is what splits hexthorpe from balby.
Hexthorpe is primarily made up of rows of terraced housing, which i believe were for the railway workers, but don't quote me on that!
It has a church in the centre of the village but i can't for the life of me remember what it's called.
At the west end of the village where greenfield lane meets urban road there is a large park. I've marked that as a green splodge!, and just over the road on the corner is the villages primary school.

Also forgot to add the church which has been mentioned previously in the replies 'St. John the Evangelist'
is located on the corner of Balby Road and Greenfield Lane.
