Crilly/Patterson, Belfast, 1928

Grace Patterson (Crilly) was my Grandmother and thankfully those details in your last post I do have - it is the next generation back on both sides but especially Grace Patterson Crilly's father John Patterson who is difficult to trace.

John Patterson was a sailor who married my GGMother Catherine O'Kane and lived at Garmoyle Street, Belfast in 1881, Clanmorris Street in 1882 and 177 York Street in 1884 (these are addresses recorded on the birth certficates of his 3 daughters Elizabeth, Catherine and Grace) who is proving very difficult to trace.  In fact the only solid information I have about him is his name appearing on his childrens birth certs - I can't find any record of his marriage to Catherine O'Kane (born 17/02/1856 to Peter Kane and Elizabeth McGrath).  I do know that he worked on liners that sailed between Liverpool and New York and almost certainly was on the crew of the SS Britannic in 1892 when on one trip his children were passengers.

In the meantime I will try to follow up on the Crilly link in Coleraine.

The records for Co. Derry at RootsIreland confirm the Crilly/Doherty marriage, though the church name doesn't seem to be quite the same. I did not spring for the 5 Euros to see the record yet, I confess.

Regarding our mystery man John Patterson: He's Philip & my great-grandfather. His timeline is something like:
1847 - born in Ireland, per the 1901 England census (no birth record found yet).
186? - presumably married for the first time; no known marriage record.
1867 - had a son John H. Patterson, born in "Northern Ireland". Year given in 1900 US census for John H.
1878 - married Catherine O'Kane, presumably his 2nd wife, in Belfast.
1887 or thereabouts -- his wife Catherine passed away.
1898 or thereabouts -- married his 3rd wife Annie, maiden name unkown, in Liverpool.
1916 - passed away in Liverpool.

Missing facts include parents' names, the maiden names of  his 1st and 3rd wives, and whether he had siblings.

FreeBMD (www.freebmd.org.uk) shows 1 marriage (1895-1900) for a John Patterson to an Annie in Liverpool and 1 in Wigan. Of cousie "Annie" could have used the name Ann, Anne, etc. on the marriage record which will probably increase the possibilities.

brides: Annie Flynn, Annie Rogers

But searching on the Lancashire version says Annie Flynn was his bride-

You can use both the sites to search for other marriages.

A birth certificate for the son John H. Patterson would get you the 1st wife's name. There's nothing in civil registration index for a John H_ Patterson born 1860/1869 near Belfast but he could have been registered as John (without middle name) or born a bit earlier (birth registration started in 1864).
If John H. Patterson married and died in the U.S. it might be worth checking those certificates if you haven't done so already. Most U.S. states list birthplace (although might just be down as 'Ireland' or 'Belfast') and names of parents (although since John's mother would have died when he was so young he might have given his stepmother's name on the marriage certificate.

Hmm, I should have know to try FreeBMD. I didn't know, though, that there was a Lancashire version. Thanks very much both for letting me know about the sites, and for the lookups.

And yes, I also have not checked U.S. records other than the census for John H. I'll have to do that.
