Samuel Frith - Born in Welshpool 1842
« on: Friday 09 February 07 15:23 GMT (UK) »
I have a mystery on my hands and wondered if anyone had my ancestor in their family tree and could help solve it.

Samuel Frith was born in Welshpool in 1842 to Samuel Frith and Catherine.  In 1851 he is in Marpe, Cheshire living with his grandparents [the Friths] and is called Samuel Frith Edwards.  On his marriage certificate he is down as Samuel Frith Edwards and says his father was Samuel Frith and a boat builder.  I cannot work out why his name changes.  I have searched for deaths and marriages but to no avail.

Does anyone have Sameul Frith [Edwards] in their family tree?

Do you have Samuel's birth cert 1842?  If not it would be worth finding.  It sounds as if Samuel and Catherine weren't married and he's using both names because of that.

Thanks for that Stan.

I meant to say he was baptised in 1841 not 1842.  I got this information from the IGI and have seen his baptist record when I was in Llandrindod Wells at the Archive Office.

I have him in 1851 as I said but he now calls himself Sameul Edwards and he's staying with his grandmother.

I realize this post was many years ago but I was curious to know if you found any more information on Samuel's name change?  I am his 3rd great grandaughter in the United States and have just started our ancestry research.

Hi Liz

I was really pleased to receive your email.

Samuel Frith was my great great great grandfather on my mother's side of the family.  I haven't found any more information on his name change.  It still remains a mystery.  Please tell me how he fits into your family tree?  William Leak Edwards Samuel's son who emigrated to Canada in 1917 was my great great grandfather and his daughter Elizabeth Edwards was my great grandmother. I haven't found out anymore on Samuel Friths mother Catherine either.  Please let me know.

Hello!
I am so excited that you received my email.  Over the past few days, this is what I have discovered.

As you wrote in your past message, Samuel Frith Edwards was living with is paternal grandmother in 1851 in Marple, Cheshire.
In a copy of the 1861 census a 19 year old Samuel Edwards is listed as a servant to a William Leak, whose wife is Catherine in Birtle, Bamford.  Considering that our Great Great Grandfather's name is William Leak Edwards I am assuming this is our Samuel Edwards and he named his son after the William Leak he lived with.
Also, according to a search I did on the Lancashire BMD webpage William Leak married a Catherine EDWARDS in 1850 at St. Mary in Bury.  I can only assume this is Samuel's mother and this is where the last name Edwards comes into play.
These are all assumptions but they seem to match up with concrete facts such as Samuel's son's name, his mother's name, and the surname of Edwards.

Where do I fit into all of this?  My grandfather was Leonard Edwards of Cleveland, Ohio in the United States.  His father, my great-great grandfather, was Geoffrey (Jeffrey) Edwards, who emigrated to Canada with his father William Leak Edwards in 1917.  Geoffrey, ended up in Cleveland, Ohio in 1927 and married my great grandmother.

Geoffrey Edwards appears to be Elizabeth Edwards brother, which makes us distant cousins!

I have not done much research in Elizabeth.  Did she stay in England when her father left for Canada?  Also, it is my understanding that Elizabeth and Geoffrey did not have to same mother and Elizabeth's mother was named Amelia, is this accurate?  And what happened to Amelia?

My personal email is *  Please feel free to email me any time.  My mother and I have been looking forward to connecting with some of our distant family members.
