Looking for Anthony Gillespie
« on: Thursday 08 February 07 14:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi, could some kind soul look up the birth of Anthony Gillespie.

He was born 1843 in Birmingham according to the 1881 & 1901 census.
He was a sailor then a labourer,  am finding it hard to trace him before the the 1881 census.
He married Jane Waters in Whitby 1866,they had 5 children that i know of.

I have tried the FreeBMD to find his birth but with no luck, also tried the Latter Day Saints site.

Any help much appreciated.

Couldn't find him on Ancestry  ???

He is not at home in the 1891 census, as he was a sailor i suspect he was on a vessel somewhere.
Cant locate the family in the 1871 census either.
There is a gap of 6 years between their first and second child, i am assuming they might have had more but they didn't survive, or Anthony was away for a long time at sea.

The family is at 7,Newton St,Middlesbrough in 1881 & 1891, not sure about the address in the 1901 as i ran out of credits.

So it looks like another line of my family is going to be a tough one to locate  ;)

Hi Jim, thanks for taking the time to look.
I checked with the Tees Valley Index and there were two Emmeline's born in 1885 mine is the one with the middle name of Maud.
I double checked with the marriage index and i have the right one.
I have had problems locating her in the 1901 census also, she didn't marry until 1910 so must have had a different spelling for her name.
I contacted a lady on another site and she has the other Emmeline. She was the one who gave me Anthony as my gt gt gt grandfather.

The 1901 entry with Anthony as lodger, is actually staying with his daughter and son in law. Also know as WOFF/WOOF in other census returns.

In the 1871 census they had only the one daughter that i know of Sarah Jane R born 1867 Whitby, but i cant even locate her.
Have tried using the various spellings but to no avail. They must have been somewhere ???

Hello Carol
Young women quite often went into service as you know but weren't included on the census often due to confusion on who should be on it.I have one or two like that.
I'll have another look around and try and be a bit more inventive with the variations.
