Hello Carol
You'd be amazed at the different spellings and mistranscriptions there are for this name, but whatever you put they are not there.Sorry.
I'm going for a lie down in a dark room.

Hi, thanks for the information.
Was beginning to think it was just me who couldn't find them.

Jim, i have a room just for this situation except mine is padded  ;D

Suz, i had no idea she married twice, it didn't occur to me to look at all the marriages after 1881. I see the name Emmeline is used again.

Val, i am under orders to wait till next month to order more certificates  ::) Had to order some for my hubby's side of the family this month, so as soon as i get paid i will order Anthony and Jane's marriage cert. and see what it has to say.Was hoping it wouldn't come to that.I thought Gillespie would be an easy surname to trace, should have known better.

Thanks again. Will let you know if i find anything new.

Thanks for that Suz, i did find a birth for an Anthony Gillaspy born Derby 1843 on the FreeBMD site but i ruled it out as Derby is quite a way from Birmingham.

Maybe he changed place of birth for some reason and i am going round in circles  ;D

Is there any way to check what boat he may have been on in 1871 and 1891?

Had a look on findmypast.com and there are two entries for Anthony, one taken in Derby age 17 and one taken in Durham age 19.Will give them a look when i get paid and see if i cant pin him down.

Anthony Gillespie born Derby - father also called Anthony, was a school teacher on the 1861 census in Derby.
Anthony Gillespie born Newcastle aged 19 and visiting in County Durham was a clerk in an iron works.

Hi Valda, thanks very much for looking for me.

It seems a big leap from school teacher to mariner.
Not looking likely either of these are my man is it?

I am wondering if he was at sea in 1861 also, would explain why i cant find him.
He could have made port near Whitby and thats where he met Jane.

Thanks again.

Hi Carol
there is quite a large family of Gillespies from Irish descent thru' the censii
(spelt different ways) but I don't think they are yours either.
I agree that Anthony was at sea but if he was a merchant mariner rather than Royal Navy it would be almost impossible to know where he was unless you have an employer, and as merchantmen worked on different ships he probably had several of those.
I think it's Anthony 1 Carol 0  :'(

Hi Jim, i think you maybe right.

All i know about his work is what i have gotten from the census entries.

In 1871 his wife is the wife of a Mariner, then in 1881 he is listed as a sailor.
So doesn't look like he was with the Navy.
He was away what seems like a few years at a time so he probably worked for different employers as and when work appeared.

Have ordered the 1851 census disc from the Latter Day Saints,he may still elude me but as its for the UK at least i might be able to pin him down somewhere.
And if all else fails i have made an investment for future researching  ;)

Thanks for everyones help,it is greatly appreciated.

Carol
