jonjor, this is a long shot.  My mother told me that she was related to the Cooksons in the Northwich area and I noted that you have a Northwich branch in your research.
All I currently know is that they had a Jewellers shop in Witton Street.   My mothers maiden name was Davies, her mothers maiden name was Lewis.  They are from: Helsby, Birkenhead, Bunbury, Little Budworth, Liverpool.  Do any of these connect with the information that you have?

Hi Kassi/Jim
You've certainly solved my interest in the Cooksons at Meadowbank Farm and filled in bits of info. which was niggling me.  My connection is that my father - William Fairbairn - was the son of Robert Fairbairn - youngest brother of Sarah Hannah Fairbairn -  cousin to Ethel & Joseph Cookson.  I was evacuated to Winsford for a short time at the beginning of the war and stayed with auntie Ethel & uncle Jim Hickson at the butchers in the High Street, Winsford.  I've only been trying to trace ancestors for a short time compared with some and am still learning so am interested to know how you have managed to get back as far as 1595?  I have only got back to about 1794 for William Fairbarin who was born in Berwick, Scotland and then moved to Camberwell.  Have you by any chance managed to trace James Edward and William Louis Fairbairn.  They were the middle brothers of Sarah Hannah?  They both married in 1884 to Mary Sharples and Caroline Melloy respectively.  After this can find no trace in any census.    Is it possible that Jim's mother was Eileen Preston nee Hickson?

Regards jonjor
Hi again Jonjor, is that Joan of Joan and norman!!!My Mum as you say was Eileen Preston, she used to visit Lil and Bill in stretford, are you Joan the daughter??My sister christine said you were just starting this research thing!!. Let  me have your e.mail address and I will contact you about the Cooksons line, which as I say goes back to 1595, I have a mountain of info on them but little on the Fairbairn side. I have attached a couple of pics, the baby is my mum with Ethel( Nan) and great grandma Sarah Hanna, nee Fairbairn,  the couple are Joseph My great uncle and his wife Francis(fanny) nee Douglas, I have others, plus paper cuttings and Wills  regards Jim

Hi Jim/Kassi
Yes I am Joan of Joan and Norman and Lil & Bill of Stretford.  Many thanks for the photographs - much appreciated.  Unfortunately I don't think I have any of the Fairbairns.  If I have I don't know who they are as most of those I have seem to be of my mother's side of the family and then I there are no names or dates on them.  Should be pleased to receive any more info you have on the Cooksons.  If you would like what details I have on the Fairbairns please let me know.
My email address is
joan.sullivan1(at)btinternet.com
Again, many thanks

Cooksons in Cheshire

We have Cookson ancestors who lived in the areas of Great Barrow, Tarvin, Tarporley, Clotton, Utkinton, Little Budworth, Sandbach, Winsford and Cuddington - probably many more too.

Most of them were millers and farmers, and one of them - James Cookson - was very wealthy. He lived at Utkinton Lodge but owned Hockenhull Hall, Holmestreet Hall, Park Hall and Woodford Hall near Winsford. When he died in 1877 he left money to build the church at Cotebrook.

Anybody out there got any connections or Cookson ancestry?

Cheers,
John

Hi there John
The Cooksons that I am connected to don't, unfortunately, seem to be connected to your Cooksons.  Mine starts with Joseph (1862) born in Eccles, married (Sarah Hannah Fairbairn) in Manchester,  had a son Joseph, (1889) who moved to Winsford and owned   Meadowbank Farm.
Can't see any traces of a James in my Cooksons but if you think of anything else that may help you please give a shout.
Good searching
