You need to find the marriage of her to Wm Newton.

If she was a widow and is down as Ellen Downs that would be her prior married surname not birth surname, sometimes both are given .

1841 census

I am interested to find
ELLEN DOWNS, age 25 of Stoke (or possibly Langport or Hanley).

Thank you,

Florence Kate

hello patrish,

Yes, I do see your point but I'm a bit stuck on finding her marriage to William Newton because it is likely to be before 1837 and I don't know WHERE I'm looking.  Do you have any ideas?

To MrsT_tobe,

I am simply quoting what Ellen gave as her place of birth in the 1851 and 1861 censuses (Stoke),  the 1871 census (Burslem) and 1891 census (Langport).   They may be wrong, but this is what she thought on each of these occasions.  Langport could well be Longport.  Thank you for that.

Florence Kate.

A couple of points, have you considered that they may not have legally married.

I dont seem to be able to pick up the Burton (Newton) family with the reference you gave on Ancestry.  :(

Glad I can be of some help. If its Burslem then I think it's Longport rather than Longton  :)

Thanks for the suggestion.  The place is certainly close to where I hope to find William Newton, but I'm not at all sure about a brickmaker.  The William NEWTON I am looking for was first a  BOATMAN, and later a railway worker. However, I will keep your suggestion in mind.  Thank you.

My apology, must be the wrong Newton.  William Newton married Hannah Cherry 11 November 1834 at Great Brington, Northants.

Hello Patrish,

Yes, I suppose it's perfectly possible that they were not legally married.   The 1841 reference I gave  (HO107, 992, 3/5 2) points to the Burton family living in Wharf Street, Shelton.  The original I looked at is exceedingly feint, hence, i think, the reason for a certain confusion over the surname.

What I could do about finding the marriage if there is one, I am not sure....
