« on: Monday 22 November 04 09:47 GMT (UK) »
My grandmother married at least twice to my knowledge and if anyone has any information regarding the following people and places let me know.
The family home was high street Molash KENT
Mr Carey was my grandmothers first husband of whom I know absolutely nothing other than he fathered a large family.    Unfortunately the christian names of the majprity of the children are unknown to me. However Nelly Powell nee Carey  was A close friend of my mother.
Queenie Shield, the daughter of another member of the family was  known to me
and became  a pen pal and occasional visitor to my home
Nelly married James Powell a photographer  in Canterbury 1920-60   James had a studio specialising in social portraiture and work for Canterbury school.
Queenie married a merchant navy captain who was murdered at sea.
John Shield Queenies son is the Principal of a college in Cambridgeshire.
Circa1890 +
Grandmothers second husband Mr Kelsey is said to have been either a police constable { I dont think it's true} or a forman at a gas works.
Once again a large family { poor woman ,Life must have been hard} anyway if you can throw any light on any of the following people or those mentioned above cantact me
Lily Kelsey, Alec Kelsey . Florence Kelsey, Albert Kelsey, Ernest Kelsey Alfred Kelsey
and possibly others

Hi David,

You don't give any details about your grandmother.  What was her birth name and when do you think she was born and where?  From what you have said in your letter, you should be able to at least find her in the 1901 census.  Please outine what you know about about her and we may be able to trace her background. ;)

Hi David,

As you do not have any census information to go by due to your grandmother being born after the 1901 census, certificates will be the only way for you to confirm the birth of your grandmother and her parents names.

I suspect that this is your grandmothers birth entry:

Births Sep 1903, Kelsey  Lily    Blean  2a 1004

From this information, you can order a birth certificate to confirm parental information.

From the fathers information you sent, I would suspect that that information is incorrect.  I found a marriage entry for George Kelsey in the same location as Lily's birth:

Free BMD:

Marriages Mar 1893, Kelsey  George    Blean  2a 1047
Marriages Mar 1893, Stroud  Caroline Maria     Blean  2a 1047

Kent Registration Services:

Name: KELSEY, George, ,
Year of Marriage: 1893
Entry Number: 37
Register: BL/8
Location: CANTERBURY AND SWALE

Name: STROUD, Caroline, M,
Year of Marriage: 1893
Entry Number: 37
Register: BL/8
Location: CANTERBURY AND SWALE

If you purchase the certificate for Lily and find that the above people are her parents, you can then start searching the census information for other family members.

I hope that helps.

Hi Nancy,
Many Thanks   , you  have certainly given me a line to follow.
The George & Caroline marriage appears to be my grandmothers wedding, it looks right  and I will send for a certificate . to confirm the family connection.[]

A point in passing,,,, My grandmother was not Lily Kelsey, she was my mother.
No matter the information you have given me is very much appreciated and a positive step forward.      I will let you know how I get on.
My mothers family never kept records not even a family bible I have often  wondered why but perhaps I may find the answer by tracing their history.

Hi David,

Sorry about the misunderstanding about who your grandmother was.  That may be why I could not find a Carey link.  I must then ask, was STROUD the birth name for Caroline?  Do you have any idea how old she was when she married the Carey fellow and how long after she married George Kelsey?

I think you should put an enquiry into the lookup section of this website asking for the 1891 and 1901 census.  Clearly state that the couple were not married in the 1891 census but married before the 1901 census.  In this way you may be able to get a stepping stone to start your tree.

This is how I would post it:
______________________________________________
1891 & 1901 Census Lookup Please:

I am looking for the following couple on the 1891 and 1901 census:

George Kelsey, birth unknown
Caroline Stroud, birth unknown

George and Caroline married in 1893 so I am looking for them as single individuals on the 1891 census but as a married couple on the 1901 census.  They married in the Blean District so I suspect they are in that area for the 1901 census.  Any help is greatly appreciated as I am looking for my first stepping stone to start my family tree.

P.S. - Family lore has it that Caroline was married prior to George Kelsey to a Mr. Carey.  If she is not located on the 1891 census, she may be under the name of CAREY.

Good Luck David, I hope you find your family.

Hi David,

Glad to hear you are ordering the certificates.  I don't know what you mean't about helping me.  The look up was for you.  If you post it you may get a census result for your family.  Hope the certificates pan out for you.
