« on: Tuesday 06 February 07 00:21 GMT (UK) »
A cousin has spent a lot of time trying to get to the roots of our Popkin line. She is now sure that Charles Popkin b 1840
parents were  Henry Popkin b abt 1811
Harriot Rawlins b abt 1811 They married  13 April 1830 Southwark St Olave
Their children were left as orphans when  Henry died 1852, Harriot had passed away in 1848. Their children ;
                       Alfred  b abt 1836
                      Charles b abt 1840
                      Emma b abt 1842
                      Julia b abt 1845
I'm looking for anyone who can increase our knowledge on this family. The Children attended London District School Norwood, All Saints Croydon Surrey.  regards pegdoll

It looks like the ages of the children are  a little out.

The children you mention are on 1851 census as inmates at the School in Norwood and p.o.b. given as not known - poor little mites , they probably didn't know how old they were!!!
I have found (what looks like) more children -and the mentioned children on 1841 census.

Thankyou so much for the time you have taken for me. My cousin and I have been trying to find the correct Charles Popkin for a number of years as there are three born about this time and area. By a process of elimination we have Charles born August 1839 Bethnal Green to Henry and Harriot Popkin. The problem was that Charles  "married" Louisa Smith and had a large family but there is no marriage! Family history said they did not marry and we have done a lot of work on this and found no marriage.
Thankyou again regards pegdoll.

Have you checked this marriage out?

Name is slightly different -but it does happen!!
There is only one male and two females on the page

FreeBMD
mar qtr 1865
on same page
Charles Pipkin
Louisa Hannah Broughton
Fanny Miles
Kensington
1a 10

???????????????
Did you get Louisa's name from children's birth cert?
Maybe she had been married before??

Yes the Smith name came from the childrens birth certificates.
No we have not looked at the marriage you found.
We did look at Charles popkin & Louisa Alma Smith 1875 at West Ham same vol different page number but it was a dead end.
Thankyou for your help, it could be worth looking into.
regards pegdoll.

I am wondering if you have the correct Charles - the one who we have been tracking who "married" Louisa - to me doesn't seem to be the same Charles who was in the Norwood school

That one seems to have married a Ruth???
