Richard HALCROFT
« on: Sunday 04 February 07 06:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi
This is a bit of a long shot but I am hoping there is someone out there who can help. I am looking for Richard Halcroft (or any variation of the spelling) who was b in about 1810 somewhere in England.  He came to Australia somewhere between 1829 and 1832 presumably as a convict. He married Mary George in 1843 in Kelso and moved to Molong and they had 10 children.  Mary was the daughter of a convict. I am really looking for when and how he came to Australia and anything about him from before that.  He really seems to be a bit of a brickwall. I will appreciate anything.

Regards
Fiona

Hi Fiona

Bounty immigrants who arrived 1828-32 can be searched here
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7385

Do you know for sure he was a convict? Many free settlers were coming to NSW by 1832.

Thanks Trish....I'll certainly check that site.......family folklore says he was a convict but we have been unable to find any proof one way or another.  I am open to suggestion :-)

He does seem tricky to find - the spelling changes don't help either  :(   No doubt someone else will have more information.

The birth certificate of any of his later children might tell you what county in England he came from.  That will narrow things down a bit.

Hi,

There is a Richard "Houlcroft" who was given a life sentence for stealing money, in the Lancaster Quarter Sessions, 12 July 1826.   He was later transported to NSW on board the "Albion", 21 September 1826.  He received his Ticket of Leave on 1 July 1835 in Bathurst.

Hope this helps.

Christine
