Hi

I can see several children, including a Michael, a Martin and a John, living with parents John and Bridget GILMARTIN in Lanarkshire in 1851.  All were born in Ireland.

1851 Census Scotland Lanarkshire Gorbals
151 Main Street

GILMARTIN
John Head Marr 58 Hawker Ireland
Bridget Wife Marr 52 Ireland
Ann Dau Unmarr 22 Ireland
John Son Unmarr 20 Ireland
Michael Son Unmarr 18 Ireland
Luke Son Unmarr 16 Ireland
Matthew Son Unmarr 14 Ireland
Bridget Dau Unmarr 12 Ireland
Martin Son Unmarr 10 Ireland
Sarah Dau Unmarr 5 Ireland

Do you think that this is the family that you are looking for??

Cheers
Karenlee

good morning my friend, and let me too welcome you to rootschat, can i ask why you think the boys were in glasgow on the 1851 census?

trish posted for the 1861 census and said that there was a transcription error in relation to spelling the surname, well i think this is your thomas

1861 census; miller's court (also)

thomas...age 51...blacksmith...born airdrie
sarah...age 21...born ireland

name transcribed as gilmourton

now in 1851 i believe the sisters are with their mum mary;

1851 census; 33 princes street, glasgow st.mary

mary...head...age 38...pawn broker...
mary...dau...age 18
sarah ann...dau...age 11
rose...dau...age 9

all born ireland.

michael married mary 19th feb 1860

children from this marriage

margaret...24/1/1861
thomas...13/11/1862
patrick...14/10/1864
john...18/6/1867
michael...12/3/1871
helen...2/7/1873

thomas married sarah 11th feb 1861

children found from this marriage

james...9/1/1862

you will find more info and death/birth certs on the scotlandspeople website, you can also access the 1871 and 1881 censuses for the above families.

happy hunting

Hi Joe and irishjust

Karen did in fact, post on 1851 and I (Trish) posted on 1861 for Michael only (not Thomas)  (what did you drink for dinner today Joe?)

I haven't checked any BDM data but it should be noted that the IGI
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

has the civil birth and marriage index records for Scotland for the period 1855-1875, (births including parent names) so they can be checked there - being no charge, at a cheaper rate than ScotlandsPeople. Joe may well have found his information there. If you want the full certificate details, you can buy from SP or presumably get the film from the LDS

Thank you all for your time

I did find the marriage banns for Michael & Mary Ann in 1860 and also for Thomas and Sarah in 1861.

The Gilmourton records are indeed my family as well as the Devitt's.

I was trying to determine where in Ireland Michael and Thomas Gilmartin had come.

Can you share what info is on the census for the Devitt's, Michael & Hugh?

Thanks again and this will indeed help in furthing my search.  It has certainly given me a few more clues to go on.

Thank you!

Joe,
On the following post, do you remember the surname? If Gilmartin/Gilmourton not  sure these fit in. Griffin/Griffen would tho.
Thanks much I so appreciate your help.
