My Family Tree
« on: Wednesday 31 January 07 17:37 GMT (UK) »
Is there anyone out there able to help me,at 70 years of age this is a first for me, I have with the help of many relatives managed to trace back to my G/G/Grandfather a Richard Joseph Binns or Bains Gadney born in Oxford, in the parish of Holywell in or about 1803/06 married a Susan...? who we believe was born in 1815, I am trying to find his fathers & Mothers name who would be my G/G/G/ Grandfather, this may enable me to go even further, any help would be appreciated.

Hi again

Thomas & Elizabeth Gadney also had Sarah 1792, Betsy 1794, William 1796 Richard Joseph Binns 1806, Francis 1808,  Mary 1811 and Alfred in 1814 - the only entry with any other details is that for Alfred in 1814 - Thomas is a fisherman and they are living in Kings Mile.

There is a marriage in the Oxfordshire marriage index 12th July 1790 of Thomas Gadney to Elizabeth Davis at St Mary Magdelene Oxford.

Hi me again

that gap in the baptisms bothered me - I have just found 3 more at All Saints  Thomas baptised 1799, John baptised 1801 and Elizabeth baptised 1803 all children of Thomas & Elizabeth Gadney

Hi Jim

Ijust had a quick look at the register transcripts for St Mary Magdeline Oxford where Thomas & Elizabeth married  - the marriage was by Banns and the witnesses were Michael Davis & Ann Freeborn.

Also in the burials for the same parish I found (amongst others) the burial of Alfred Gadney aged 2 in 1815, Then Elizabeth Gadney in 1823 aged 51 and Thomas Gadney aged 73 in 1839 - so that will give you approximate years of birth for both of them   :)

The similarity between mine and your daughters names is probably down to the fact that we were  born around the same time Debbie or Deborah was quite an 'in' name around the early 60s I believe.   :D

Now here comes the cheek, You seem to be very clued up on this infectious subject ? so I'm asking for your expertise, can you possibly find the parents of the same Thomas? and secondly, can you reccomend a Family Tree programme,
Bearing in mind may I say it is only my hobby, seems full time at the moment. IO see you are in Ashby del just down the road from me, Tamworth,
I know I'm cheeky,

My email if you wish is gadders@leshed51.fsnet.co.uk

Kindest Regards Jim Gadney c 1936

Hi Jim

Glad you're enjoying it, on the subject of which program I use Family Tree Maker,  it is produced in various forms, some of the expensive ones have lots of data disks with them, which I have have never found of much use, its mainly American stuff,  but the basic program I like and find very user friendly.  For a discussion and other peoples points of veiw there is a section of rootschat devoted to the subject, from the start page go to the Common Room board and from there to the off shoot technical advice board about second or third subject down from there is a thread with links to various discussions of the different programs available.

Coming back to the Gadneys in Oxford - Thomas was born around 1766 (not 1772)  and Gadney is not a common name in Oxford I have found a baptism in 1767 in St Martins Oxford of Thomas son of John & Mary Gadney,  they also had John in 1761, Mary in 1762, another John in 1766, Kitty in 1769 and possibly another John in 1777.

I will have a look and see if I can find a marriage for John & Mary

I have found the marriage of a John Gadney of Oxford St Martins to Mary Mores 30th March 1760 at Oxford St Aldgate.

There are 4 earlier baptisms in the Oxford St Martins registers for Gadneys 1736 John s/o John & Mary, 1741 Mary d/o John & Mary, 1747 Katherine d/o John & MAry and 1749 John s/o John & Mary.  So the John baptised in 1736 could well be the John married in 1760, unfortunatly I can't see a marriage for the earlier John & Mary his parents though
