Distribution of Surnames in Ireland
« on: Friday 23 April 04 05:04 BST (UK) »
Were Irish surnames (family names) truncated? For example, would Dennehy be truncated to Denny? I am interested because of my wife's missing grandfather John Denny. If his name were originally Dennehy it might give us a lead as to his origins.

Thanks

Hello Ray,

I think Irish names were truncated. Certainly many come with several spelling variations ... there are instances of a child in one family having his/her surname spelt differently to that of his/her siblings but this would be due to a clerical error being made when the name was registered.

Christopher.
