Hi Barbara, Thanks again for your info, I am looking at the 1851 census and it says he is married to Mary from Ireland, does it say on the 1841 that Melinda is from Ireland, possible she was called Mary for short

Hi Mary,

No, as I said on my posting, all born in county (Yorkshire) - I was wondering if he was married twice, it's such an unusual name to get wrong if it ought to be Mary! Of course the older three children would have moved on by 1851 - or it could be the wrong family....... ???

Hi Barbara, Just to keep you up to date, I have received William Crookes marriage cert, but alas it only tells you his father, no mothers name, was she so unimportant? mind you his wife's mother is not listed either. I have now sent away for his birth certificate, I don't supose there will be a lot on this, as it will be a OPR, can I ask you where you get your access to census's is it private or is there a website I could go on to, I am interested in getting the 1871 census, as William's father was still living in 1870 when he was married, Thanks again

Mary

Hi Mary :)

A couple of things to note,
A marriage cert only gives the bride and grooms' fathers' names, not the mothers' names.  Also just because a father's name is entered it does not necessarily confirm that he was alive at the time of the marriage.

Birth certs have only been available since civil registration started in 1837, so the birth cert that you have applied for should give you the date and place of birth (sometimes if your lucky, you get an actual address rather than just a place name), child's name, father's name & occupation, mother's name and maiden name.

Does your marriage cert confirm William's father as Joseph?
I'll have a look on the 1871 and see if he's there.

Hi Mary,

Marriage certs in England just give father's name.
I susbscribe to www.ancestry.co.uk for census info, although I also have some census cds which you can buy.  You can get 1881 census free online at www.familysearch.org and www.ancestry.co.uk,  some census free at www.freecen.org.uk or you can pay to view some at www.findmypast.com and www.familyhistoryonline.net and for 1901 at www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi , Thanks again for your quick response, regarding th marriage cert, here in scotland, we are lucky to have both sets of parents listed, also I phoned up to ask about the father, I was told if it didn't mention he was dead, he was most likley still living.  here in Scotland, it tells you if the parents are deceased, which is great, it lets you know to go back not forward, I am waiting patiently for the birth cert now.  Thanks for the census addresses, I don't mind paying if I know I will find something, its just frustrating if you subscribe and get no where

Thanks again to  you both

Mary :)

Hello,

Looks like Melinda died in 1847 in Leeds.
I think you have the same family as me, Jane Crookes was my ancestor, her father Joseph a shoemaker. George her brother and family were lodging with them in 1881 in Leeds ( 43 St Peter's St).

Ed.

Hi Edmund, Can you tell me a little more about Jane? when she was born, if you can see the rest of my emails, you will see, that there is a Joseph Crookes married to a Mary and  Melinda, I don't know for sure if this is the same Joseph, the line I am following is William Crookes born 1841
