William Sturla why Go To Devon?
« on: Monday 29 January 07 18:44 GMT (UK) »
We have a William Sturla in our Family. He was born it appears, in Chatham about 1810. He worked it is thought in the Chatham maritime area. At some stage he goes down to Plymouth (shipyards again) here he meets a local girl Emela Brooking born about 1816. Brings her back to Chatham where they marry in 1838, William for the second time!! Why would they have come up to Chatham to wed? Was the Sturla Road in Chatham named after or connected with this William Sturla. By the 1871 Census it would appear that William and Emela have made their way to Limehouse and William is listed as a shipwright. Would this be a trade you could follow in Limehouse? Both end their days in Stepney which seems a long way from Chatham and Plymouth

Hi Joelrio,

Try contacting the local council and ask them about Sturla Road; I did this about a road in Woolwich and found it was named after a distant ancestor.

Good luck,

Joelrio,

Have you found William as a shipwright on all the census?

Limehouse right by river Thames so perhaps William was still involved with ships.

Nanny Jan,
Yes as far as I can make out he was always listed as a shipwright. He also had a 14 year old son at one time as a shipwright too. His eldest son was an Engineer but finished up as a Shipkeeper. So it would seem that boats or ships are in their blood.

Hi,

It seems we are related through this family. My great grandfather William Ernest Bennett b.1899 was the son of Phoebe Emily Mary Sturla b.1864 and her parents were William Sturla b.1842 and Phoebe Banks b.1845. William's parents were William Sturla b.1813 and Emela Mary Brooking b.1816 (These are your relations i think). That William's parents were John Sturla b.1780 and Lydia Townly b.1794. I'd be interested to know if you have any other information on this part of my family.
