Thanks Jane, I have looked there before and just had a relook.  No Caroline Ellis between 1848 and 1871 that would have been the right age, even allowing for a coule of years variation for "mistakes"

Will keep looking

Hi Robyn,

Assuming that Caroline died in 1847 or 1848, on the grounds that she married in 1847 and Alfred emigrated with his aunt and uncle in 1848,  the only death I could find during this period in Sussex was:

June Quarter 1847 in East Grinstead
Caroline Ellis
Vol 7, Page 264

In 1848 two Caroline Ellises died: one in Wandsworth and one in Dewsbury.

Hello Robyn and Dimps,

It looks like the East Grinstead one can be discounted. I have just checked the burial register (on fiche) and this Caroline Ellis was buried on 25th June 1847, age 3 years.

Hi Phil,

East Grinstead didn't feel right, as the connections were with Falmer and Brighton.  The mystery deepens.
