There is a Thomas Jackson Born 1845 who was a gardener in 1891. He seems to have been widowed however he has the following children: Agnes, Arthur, Clara ,Elizabeth, Ernest, Joseph, Margaret, Phillip, Samuel, Selina and Thomas Jnr.

Any help?

I have quite a bit of info on Thomas Jackson - he was known as 'Wangups ' Jackson... he was the nephew of Moses Jackson b1826 (son of elder brother Joseph and Emma Dallman (another well known Melbourne family))

I have several photos of this section of the family and snippets of information.

Hi everyone

Some of my ancestors were also Market Gardeners in Melbourne.  My G.G.Grandmother Beardsley owned a Garden in Cockshute Lane and I may have links with the Jackson family as in 1882 Maria Beardsley married Harry Jackson, son of Edmund Jackson who was also a Market Gardener.

My mother says they grew most veg. inc. celery.  As a young girl she said the smell in the tying houses was lovely and bunches of spring onions, radishes etc. were tied with raffia.   Her Grandmother, Mary Beardsley, was said to be the fastest bunch tier in Melbourne!!!   Another Beardsley had a Market Garden in Bolton Lane, Derby.

Don't know if this is of any help.

You're so lucky to have family info and memories being passed on  like that -  I'm really jealous as I seem to have drawn a blank on my lot completely.

Hi

thanks for the info - was that Harry Jackson b1865 son of Edmund b1834?

He also had a son Edmund b1870 but I have no more info on him.

I found a wondeful picture in a 1930's Burton Observer the other day - It is a Market Gardener in Melbourne picking Strawberrys - I'm sure it said he was well known and had worked on the land for over 40 years but it didn't name him  :(

I'm going to scan it tomorrow - hopefully - I'll post it on here and maybe someone might recognise him.
