Hi Jan

sounds interesting - do you have inscriptions for the Jacksons - I believe there are quite a few...

I keep saying I'm going to take a trip to look around myself - but maybe at Easter when it gets a bit warmer.

I have come into contact with a Jackson relation of mine - I think she has Tivey's in her tree. I'll ask her on Thursday when I see her next.

Where are you located now?

Market Gardening was one of Melbourne's main 'industries' It is still a concern but now with tractors and machinery etc I think the number of men involved is alot less.

speak to you soon

Hi Ernest

I'll do my best - hope it makes sense - I don't have any evidence of my Sarah Sutton's marrying - I think we discussed earlier in the thread that it could possibly match but not 100% sure... anyway...

My Gt Grandmother was Mary Ann Sutton 1852 - 1931 of Hartshorne she married William Bloor 1851 - 1926 also of Hartshorne.

They had 15 children that I am aware of (I would hope there weren't any more for her sake)

Mary Ann's parents were

Thomas Sutton b 1823 Hartshorne and
Martha Wallis 1822 - 1890 Hartshorne

they had 3 girls that I know of
Hannah 1845 - 1916
Harriett 1847 - 1859
and Mary Ann

Thomas' parents were
Robert Sutton 1801 - 1882 Hartshorne and
Millicent Horsley c1801 - 1861 Melbourne

they had 6 children that I know of
Thomas
William b 1827
James b c1829
George b 1830
Mary Anne b 1833
Henry b 1838

Robert's parents were

George Sutton c1771 - 1826
Mary Cox c1770 - 1810

Millicent's parents were

James Horsley c1780 and
Ann Brooks c1780

If you can add or ammend anything please let me know.

regards

Glyn

Hi Boaman

Thanks for the info. re: George Dawson and two of his wives!   His son William, my gg grandfather was born in Marples Yard and married a Mary Underwood.  Can also confirm that the Harry Jackson who married Maria Beardsley in 1882 was the son of Edmund Jackson, gardener.

Thanks again for the useful snippets!

Hello earnestly searching

Thanks for your reply.   My research into the Dawson connection is still in its infancy so all contributions gratefully received.   I'm not sure where and if Fanny Dawson fits into my family tree but my gg grandfather William Dawson certainly was born and lived in Marples Yard.   He married a Mary Underwood (dates to be ascertained) and his father was George Dawson.   Boa Man informs me that he married three times!   Lots to keep us going.

Thanks again.

Hi Miggins

My info is courtesy of a cousin who has extensively researched the Smith tree. She tells me that Frances Dawson born c1810 (who married John Smith) was the sister of George Dawson.  George also had a daughter, Fanny, who was born in 1846 and lived with John and Fanny for a while.  My cousin was previously in touch with a chap who also informed her that George married at least twice, and it went into legend that his second wife did not want anything to do with his first wife's children, hence Fanny living with her aunt (my ggg grandmother!).

This is only an assumption, but it sort of makes sense that John Smith junior should 'board' with his cousin William when things started to go bad for him (John Smith, not William!).  Interesting stuff anyway!!

Hello again, earnestly searching

Thanks for the extra information regarding the Dawson's.   I will add it to my research.   I'll speak to my mother to see if she knows anymore about the family.

I did a virtual 'walk' around Melbourne on the IGI 1881 Census and found Dawsons' living at Blanchcroft, Chambers Row, Marples Yard - Wm. Dawson (39) with wife Mary nee Underwood (31) (these are my relatives). an Edward Dawson (65) and wife Mary (70) at Marples Yard, a William Dawson (69) and wife Hannah (71) at Timberhill.   In Castle Street there was a Thomas Dawson (64) and living in New York, Hastings Street a Thomas Dawson (44) with wife Susan nee ?Greenwood (40).   Locally, New York was known as The Nuke (not sure of the spelling!)

Don't know if this of any use to you but thanks again for your help.

Hi Miggins

It looks as if it is the same family.  In 1891 census the following family are residing in Marples Yard:

William Dawson 45  (Gardeners labourer)
Mary Dawson 44
William Dawson 18
Sarah Dawson 16
Fanny Dawson 13
George Dawson 11
Ada Dawson 8
Thomas Dawson 4
John Smith 53  (this being the chap I mentioned earlier)

In 1851 the above mentioned William was living with his Uncle (Thomas - another brother of Fanny) which would fit the info regarding George's second wife not wanting his children from his first marriage, who would be Fanny junior, (living with Smiths) and William.

The good news is that it looks as if George's third wife (? Mary - one of his wives - presumeably Fanny and William's mother was Dorothy) was reconciled with at least one of his children by 1861 as young Fanny was back living with them, age 15.  We don't have an address for William in 1861 or 1871.  As you say, he turns up again in 1881 living in Marples Yard with his wife and (? stepson).

Hope this helps
