Marriage records - UK 1813
« on: Thursday 25 January 07 17:11 GMT (UK) »
HI,

New here so please bear with me.... currently researching the Burton-Phillipson family tree and been doing so for over a year.

However i need the marriage record/info for George Burton Phillipson & Mary Ann Griffith AND i know exactly when & where:

05 apr 1813 Saint James, Westminster, London

My question is: how do i view this record? Are these records available online or do i need to visit Saint James (parish/church??) in Westminster..

Apologies if this sound a silly question but any help very much appreciated.

Regards,

Mike

Parish registers for London Parishes can be viewed on film/fiche at the London Metropolitan Archives, free.

I dont know where you are, but if near London that would be a good idea.

They have a very good website whereby you can find the exact film number of the parish/year you want in advance, so your visit there is quick and easy.

Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.  If you are not near London you can get the film of most parish registers and search them at your nearest LDS centre.  They are worldwide and listed on www.familysearch.org   This is separate from the IGI, which is always a good place to start but it is not full coverage so getting a film of an actual register can be much better.  You get the burials then too and can build up a picture of the complete family with a bit of luck.
However, you may be disappointed when you see the marriage entry as very often at that time they did not give as much detail as you got after civil registration started.    You are unlikely to get names of father etc unless they happen to be witnesses or one of the parties was under age or they married by licence rather than banns.   You might be lucky and find the vicar has added a bit more information but don't count on it!

Hi Mike

Welcome to Rootschat

Westminster Archives also hold copies of these registers - see their information leaflet  "Information Sheet 1 - Guide to Anglican Parish"

http://www.westminster.gov.uk/libraries/archives/family-history/parish-registers.cfm

If you are unable to visit the Archives Centre we can supply copies of parish register entries where the exact date and church is known or census entries where the exact address is known. The charge for this service is £4.00 per entry. Cheques should be made payable to the City of Westminster and posted, along with full details of the request, to City of Westminster Archives Centre, 10 St Ann's Street, London, SW1P 2DE. Hi Mike

And welcome to Rootschat- everyone is so helpful here ;D

Westminster Archives are brilliant. I too knew the date of a marriage and mailed them to ask how I got to view the entry.

The lady there copied it and asked for my address, and then posted it to me.
Her charge........£2.......and she put a bill for that in the envelope with the cert.

Not that it told me anything new mind you- but it was lovely to have the cert.

Good luck

Carol

I have quite a bit of info on the Burton Phillipsons going back to 1600's, and can put you in touch with another person doing Burton Phillipson research. Your George and Mary are in our tree.

I am reviving a very old topic here but hopefully some of the previous contributors are still around.

I also have George and Mary in my tree and would appreciate any further info.

Thanks

Hi Glenn

Both Mike and Dave haven't been online here since Nov 2007. If they have changed their email addresses or switched off their notifications they won't know that we have posted on this topic.

Keep your fingers crossed that they come back here soon.
