1841/1851/1861/1871 census
« on: Thursday 25 January 07 13:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi to all , sorry this looks really cheeky and a tall order putting all these census dates, but I was wondering if any one has access to any of these  if they could do a lookup for me please.

I am searching for the family of John Evans born 1809 at Cilmaenan, Llanfaethlu, Anglesey and his wife Elizabeth Thomas born at Merddyn, Llanrhyddlad, Anglesey.

John Evans is shown with two of his sons on the 1881 census as farmer and bonesetter, living at Maes, Llanfairynghornwy ,he passed away in August of the same year, and according to a lineage table that I have for John Evans he is shown as having four children the eldest being Catherine followed by William, Richard and John the last child is shown as being born at the address in the 1881 census. I would welcome any names of any one working for them as well.
The child I am interested in is Catherine as it is a possibility that she could be my Gt Grandmother, I have done many searches with no luck but feel this maybe her, if she is shown on any of the census ( I know she was in Liverpool in 1881) then at least I would have an age for her and then can either search further or discount her,it would be easy to send for yet another birth cert with so much info but I need to be more certain than in the past. Any help any one can offer would be more than welcome. cheers Liverbirds

1871 - RG10, piece 5746, folio 62, p 11.
Maes, Llanfairynghornwy, Anglesey.

John Evans, Head, M, 61, Farmer, b. Anglesey.
Elizabeth Evans, Wife, M, 52, Farmer's Wife, b. Anglesey.
Cathrine Evans, Daughter, S, 21, b. Anglesey.
William Williams, Son, S, 18, b. Anglesey.
Richard Evans, Son, S, 15, b. Anglesey.

William is on the census return as William Williams - enumerator mistake, maybe?

John Evans, Head, M, 51, Farmer of 30 acres, employing 1 man, b. Llanfaethlu, Anglesey.
Elizabeth Evans, Wife, M, 42, Farmer's wife, b. Llanrhydlad, Anglesey.
Cathrine Evans, Daughter, 11, Scholar, b. Llanfairynghornwy, Anglesey.
William Evans, Son, 8, Scholar, b. Llanfairynghornwy, Anglesey.
Richard Evans, Son, 5, Scholar, b. Llanfairynghornwy, Anglesey.

Elin Williams, Servant, 16, Housemaid, b. Llanfairynghornwy, Anglesey.

I've noticed that a lot of my Welsh Catherines are written as Cathrine in all the records.

I wonder if Maes farm is still there?

Looks like John inherited the farm from his uncle:

1851 - HO107, piece 2522, folio 119, pp 6 and 7.
Maes, Llanfairynghornwy, Anglesey.

William Evans, Head, Widower, 85, Farmer 27 acres, b. Llanfairynghornwy, Anglesey.
John Evans, Nephew, M, 41, Farmer's son, b. Llanfaethly, Anglesey.
Elizabeth Evans, M, 33, Farmer's daughter, b. Llanfaethly, Anglesey.
Catherine Evans, 1, b. Llanfairynghornwy, Anglesey.
Robert Roberts, Servant, S, 16, Ag lab, b. Llanfairynghornwy, Anglesey.
Ellen Thomas, Servant, S, 24, House servant, b. Llanfairynghornwy, Anglesey.

Under "Relation to Head of Family" Elizabeth and Catherine are both listed as "Nephew".

Dear Claire and Monica , Thank you both so much for all your efforts. The Catherine shown in the census you have found is approx 4 yrs older than the age of my Gt Grandmother in the 1881 census, there she is shown as a 35 yr old making her birth year 1846, I had such a strong feeling about this one but I will keep all the info you have given me as the age on the 1881 census could be wrong and you may have nailed this one for me. Thanks once more for your help and interest, cheers Liverbirds :)

Four years isn't too big a change in ages from census to census, especially if she married between them.  Would there be a reason to lose a few years - husband's age, for instance?

Monica

(Sorry - realised she shows up as older in the 1881, not younger.  That's not such a common change unless the information was given to the enumerator/filled in on the form by someone other than Catherine.)

John Edwards, Head, M, 43, Grocer & Provision Dealer, b. Anglesea, Wales.
Ellen Edwards, Wife, M, 41, b. Derbyshire.
Henry Edwards, Son, 9, b. Manchester.
Catherine Evans, Servant, 15, b. Anglesea, Wales.

1871 - RG10, piece 3973, folio 96, p 6.
Northenden Road, Limefield, Withington, Lancashire.

Ralph Waller, Head, M, 56, Spinner & Manufacturer, b. Liverpool.
Ursula Waller, Wife, M, 51, b. Blackburn.
Ralph D Waller, Son, S, 24, b. Manchester.
Catherine Evans, Servant, S, 25, Waitress, Domestic, b. Wales.

Florence Garstang, Visitor, 7mths, b. Blackburn, Lancs.

Good luck with sorting out the connections.
