Caerphilly burials....

Hello all,

I am doing a favour for a friend of mine and wonder if anyone could help ?

He has relatives who he believes come from Caerphilly. The family name is Lewis.
He has been informed that his GGrandma was possibly married to a German Army Officer, pre WW1, who is, he believes, buried in or around Caerphilly and has been told that there is a plaque of some sort naming this Gentleman.
Could any of you kind people be able to point me in the right direction so I can help solve this problem

Hi Tony.I live in Caerphilly but you will need to give me more details.Do you know the name of the German officer envolved.What was he doing here pre 1914.
There are quite a number of Lewis families in the area which may be difficult to identify with your friends family.

Hi Hugh,

I have spoken to my friend and he does not know the name of the German, however, he has reason to believe that he may be buried or at least the plaque or whatever mentioning this guy is in the St Barrwg Church in Bedwas. Which I believe is near Caerphilly and Trethomas. He has also found out that he has relatives buried at the same church, name Carter.
The name of his ancestor who came from Caerphilly is Rachael Lewis, ( not sure if her first name is spelt right ) and she married a gent by the name of Percy Carter, ne came from devon.
It was Rachaels mother who was conected with the German soldier. It is not known why the German Officer was in the area pre WW1, maybe there was a training area they used or something like that.

Hi Tony.  I will be passing St. Barrwg Church in the next couple of days so will pop in and see whether I can see any reference to the burial or plaque of this German Army Officer.
If you have not done so Google has quite a bit of info. regarding this Church including some very good photographs.I also notice that the Gwent FHS has transcripts of the burials in the Church which you may find useful.

Hi Tony.  I visited St Barrwg Church today but unfortunately could not find any trace of the plaque  within the Chuch.I also spoke to the Warden and she was also unaware of one
I would suggest you ring the Rector who may be able to help.
I did however come across the grave of Joseph William Carter 11 03 1951 age 62,his wife Lily 21 11 1972 and an infant son,Ronald Brian.Whether there are any others buried there I do not know but I understand The Gwent Family History Society may be able to help as they have monumental inscriptions for the Church.

Hi Hugh

Thanks for what you have done I will pass on the info to Eddie.
He phoned me a short while ago and has found out that the German is not at that church, sorry.
He was told that it is somewhere in Caerphilly and the Gents name is "Glashardt" sounds like that not sure of the spelling though.
