Thanks for that Andrea.  Thats definitly him, as it is the same address that he gives on the Wedding Cert.

One of the anoying things about ancestry.co.uk is that you don't seem to be able to go to an address in the census.

This means I can concentrate on trying to find him in the 1891 and Sarah in the 41/51.

I found him by looking for every Fred* born in Brighton at about that time.  It was mistranscribed but clear enough on the original.   That method did not work for 1891 though!

You can - but it aint easy !!!  (Except for 1881, where the address is indexed)

and no, he wasnt with the Brooks in '91 - nor were they at the same address.

Discounting the military for now, that means that in 1891:-

- he wasnt using a DoB +/- 5 years of expected year
- Nor specifically Brighton as a PoB
- and maybe Frederick itself has been mistransed - and its not down as an F
