Albert Edward OLSEN and descendants from HULL
« on: Saturday 20 November 04 01:10 GMT (UK) »
I'm am looking for information on my Great Grandfather Albert Edward Olsen. He emigrated from Sweden to the UK sometime prior to 1906.

He married Mary Elizabeth Coates at St Mark's (St Mark Street) in 1907 and they had eight children (Albert Carl, William Turi, George Edward [mr grandfather], Alan, Stanley, Norah (who emigrated to the USA) and Walter and Kathleen who died as infants.

My research on the Olsen line of my family has come to a dead end with Albert as I have only vauge info on him before he arrived in Hull.

I have search though the Naturalization Records in the national Archives in London and he is not mentioned there at all.

In this country he worked for the LNER from 1906 until his death in 1933.

If anyone can help, any info will be gratefully received.

Many Thanks ???

HI,
The name Olsen has been bantered around with in my research for some time, I do not know what the link is yet, but the name (Togler not sure about this, but the christian name always sounded something like that!) certainly was somehow connected, a S E Olsen was witness to my grandmothers wedding, this was 4th June 1927. at that time addresses of my G/parents where Raywell Street and New George Street, both are in the Sculcoates district.
There is more to this than I have written, if you want you can contact me and I shall try to unravel more about it.

Sorry don't have page/folio, I just looked at 1901 census on line.  I've just had another quick search of the 1901 and found the following Olsens

John  aged 51 shipyard blacksmith
Carolina 50
Maggie  15  servant day girl domestic
Charles 13

All the above are born Sweden, naturalized British subjects and living in the civil parish of Walker, Northumberland

Don't know if theses are your Olsens but they might be worth checking.

Thanks for the info Bee but I believe that is not the Albert Olsen I'm looking for. I popped along to the National Archives at Kew yesterday and trawled through the Naturalization records they have and I could not find an Albert Edward Olsen listed. I also have, in the past, looked though the electoral rolls held in the Local Studies section the Central Library, Hull and Albert is not listed until 1914 (and then only sporadically until his death in 1933).

I also checked his two marriage and his death certificates (which by chance arrived yesterday morning) and in 1901 he would have been aged between 22 and 25 (depending on which certificate you go by.

Mentioned on the certificates is that his father was called Carl Olsen and was a Deep Sea Pilot by trade.

Thanks again anyway.

Hi

I have been trying to find your Albert without success. I have checked out a few trees on Ancestry and seen that he possibly comes from Sundsvall. Do you have anymore info on him? If of course you have everything you need.

Hi there.

The only information I have on Albert is that his Merchant Seaman book states he was born in 1875 in Sundsvall. The first voyage in the book is 22 Jan 1901 from Cardiff. His two UK marriage certificates state that his father was Carl Edward Olsen.

I have found a Fodelesbok entry for an Albert Edward Olsen born 1874 (christened 09/09/1874) in Gothenburg whose parents are Carl Edward and Carolina Olsen. Could this be him?

Thanks for looking.

Ian

According to the 1911 census he was born 1880 in Sundsvall.
I will check the Gothenburg records.
