Toogoods of Overton Hampshire

My G G Grandfather was born in 1828 in Overton Hampshire. I cab trace him back to the 1851 census, but the trail goes cold in 1841 no William Toogood born 1828. I would like to find him and who his parents and siblings were, and if the Toogoods always lived in Overton. He went on to expand and develop the Toogood Seeds Company in Southampton.
In 1841 he would have been 13yrs, did they start work then ? or could he be in an institution? I have tried all the usual research channels.
Thanks
Tati

I have just spotted that you have a cross reference for William, No I do not have a copy of that.

George Toogood may have been a carpenter who died about 1840 in Overton. There is a will for him at Hampshire Record Office in Winchester ref 1840A/107. There was also a John Toogood living in Overton during the 18th century - his will was proved in 1764.

Thank you so much for the information,it was sad to read that they had 3 infants who died a matter of days/weeks old. was infant mortality high in those days. Are there any books written about the history of Overton or Hampshire to get an insight into their lives ??

Hi Sarah,
That level of mortality is not unusual at that time.
As far as books about Overton are concerned, I'm sure there are but as with all local history books they tend to be available in the local area and not further afield. You could ask the Local Studies library that is nearest to Overton for some guidance on that.
