John Fyfe
« on: Tuesday 16 January 07 20:15 GMT (UK) »
John Fyfe is my wife's G G G Grandfather born c1799 came to Ireland as an Agriculturalist on the Gosford Estate in Co. Cavan. He married Margaret Crawford in Co Cavan in 1833

We are aware of 4 children. The eldest, John, emigrated to America to Topeka, Kansas & died in Newark, Ohio. The second son, Andrew William  went to Australia and the 150th anniversary of his arrival in Portland on board the Severn was celebrated at the end of 2006 - report in Portland Observer Wed Dec. 13th 2006. He died in Ballarat, Victoria in 1902. The 3rd son George remained in Arva (Arvagh) Co Cavan & the family still live on the farm. The youngest, Isabella, also went to America.

Unfortunately we do not know the names of John Fyfe's parents nor where in Scotland he came from but I am told that Agriculturalists were 'head hunted' in the 1800's to work on estates in Eng. Wales & Ireland. So he was possibly the son of an Estate manager or at least worked on a Scottish estate.

If anyone has any suggestions about how I go about trying to trace his Scottish roots I would love to hear from them.

I believe they may have gone to Alloa,Scotland or Clackmannan in Scotland as the details you have in your post seem familiar to my tree as remember those dates and places in one of my family's tree somwhere but not directly in Mine. However I am a direct relative of 3 John Fye's one in 1665,one in 1696 and one in 1721.

Where and when did John Fyfe die? If he died in Ireland after 1864, you should be able to get a death certificate for him, which will give you his father's name. He might also have left a will, which sometimes gives clues about relatives living elsewhere eg Scotland in this case.

Stanseek, how did you establish he came from Scotland?

Is there any further info from his Irish marriage record?

If he followed the naming tradition then his father's name would be John

Thanks for your note.

John Fyfe stated that he was born in Scotland on the 1841 census.

Hi Elwyn
'
John Fyfe died in Arva, Co Cavan in April 1868 (don't have the exact date).

Stanley, how old was John in that census when he stated he was born in Scotland?   Cross referencing that with his age when he died, you should have a rough idea of his birth year, and could start with a search on Scotland's People.   It'll be pure luck - if there is only one John Fyfe born around that year you have a start, if there are several then you are looking to narrow it down.

You know the names of his children and (if) he used the traditional naming pattern that may give you a clue to his parent's christian names     I take it there is no father's name given on the Irish marriage certificate, for either John or for Margaret?

ps - I sorry just realised you've said you've not got the marriage certificate.   Does the marriage come up in any of the Irish search sites on line?   A lot of them show the father's name or the name of witnesses?

Stanley,

You would seem to have enough information to locate John's death certificate in 1868. You can order that on-line from GRO Roscommon, Ireland. www.groireland.ie/. That should give you his age and father's name. With that you would be able to search the IGI for possible births in Scotland.
