adnitt bros northamptonshire

I have a black lace 'mourning' cape from my late mother's possessions with the labe of Adnitt Bros Northampton inside. Would anyone have any ideas about the whereabouts of this. Many of my relatives were in the lacemaking industry in and around Long Buckby.

Adnitt's as we knew it was about half way along the Drapery going north on the left hand side.  It must have been taken over by Debenhams around 1960.  My only memory of it was that it was far too expensive for most things and we shopped in the Co-op instead.

Gosh David !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That brought back some old memories.

My mother in law brought my husband and I a washing machine from Adnitt's
when she learnt I was expecting her 1st grand-child (1 of 2 both boys) in the 70's.

After all the hand-washing I had to do like so many of us in those days I
thought I was in heaven. My sister had 4 children and still had to hand-wash.

I would not have thought that there was a link from the Department Store to the
Lace Making Industry would you?

I would have thoght any direct link to the lace making industry was very unlikely.  Lace making was a common occupation of the wives and female children of labourers.  I have lace makers who lived close to the A5, as it now is, all the way from Rugby to the Hertfordshire border.  South of that they were straw plaiters supporting the Luton straw hat making industry.
