occupation- Agent of Estate?
« on: Saturday 13 January 07 14:31 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone enlighten me as to what an "agent of estate" is?
My gggrandmother Elizabeth Hughes b. May 1847
f. Rees Hughes "agent of estate"
h. John Morris b. 13 Oct 1842
ch: Elizabeth Constance b. 1884 Wallasey,
Harriette Agnes Hughes Morris b. 1885 Wallasey
This family emig. to Portland Maine 1887, where Elizabeth Morris' death certificate listed Rees & his occupation (mother unknown).  John Morris' naturalization papers say he was b. Denbigh.
Any help greatfully accepted as this family is one of my toughest stonewalls.

I can only suggest that it would relate to what we now call an Estate Agent.

Thanks for your responses, both of you.
That was pretty much my guess, but then I thought he might've been a real estate salesman, too, as my Google search suggested.
Thanks again, Joan

Have you previously tried searching for the family in the UK?

There is a possible marriage in Liverpool:

Hughes  Elizabeth Margaret
Morris  John

Liverpool  8b 436

December 1878

The marriage cert would give you the father's names and occupations, so you could specify that you only want it if the father is called Rees (or Rhys).

Let us know whether you are also looking for census records (not easy, I have tried already!)

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Yes, thanks, I have that certificate-  wrong ones.  Where John was a stonemason, he must have travelled a lot for work, so I have any number of leads all over the place for this common name.  I believe Elizabeth stayed in Liscard where their children were born on Rake Lane.
Many thanks, Joan
