Organ Pipe maker
« on: Saturday 13 January 07 09:53 GMT (UK) »
I understand that organ pipe makers travelled a lot - where would I find a list of people and where they worked form census time 1891 to census 1901?
I have lost Joseph William Armitage organ pipe maker - he was an apprentice in Huddersfield in 1881, working in 1891 in Huddersfield - born St Lukes Clerkenwell in 1866, living with father Joesph Lofthouse Armitage in 1881 and 1891
Thanks

JA

Hi JA

Welcome to RootsChat

I would suggest looking at old trade directories or street directories for Huddersfield to find the details of the company he was apprenticed to - there was probably only one in the town.  It would seem likely that he stayed working for the same company if he was there for over 10 years - I would have thought he would have been based in the factory, perhaps going out to install the pipes or to carry out repairs from time to time.

Regards, Bill

Hi JA ! and welcome from me too !!

I wonder if he could have been in the Boer War .......... that could be the reason he's missing from the 1901 !!

Do you have any other information about him or family stories maybe ??

Annie  :)

PS I checked the medal cards at the National Archives .... sometimes if soldiers survived the Boer War ... they went to WW1 ..... I couldn't find a Joseph William Armitage but I did find 3 Joseph W Armitage's
