Martha COLWELL

I've lost her. 

The family bible says she died on 09 Mar 1922 in Exeter and is buried in South Molton Grave Yard. 

She was born on 03 Mar 1836 in Bishops Nympton

Married James Newton on 22 Jan 1857 in Rose Ash

I have her in the Census where I expected in 41, 61, 71, 81

In 1881 her husband is still in Rose Ash with some of the children but she has disappeared.

Where did she go?

Is the family bible correct about her Death and Burial?

PS  she was suppose to be living with Soloman Newton at the time of her death

While I'm asking question re Martha I might as well ask about her parents.

She is illegitimate her mother is an Anne Colwell however on her marriage cert her father is listed as John Clatworthy.  Is John likely to be her natural  father or Anne's husband. (I have no idea what happened to Ann either)

I can't see a death registration for her in the first half of 1922 (under the name Martha Newton). This makes me think:

a. There's an error in the family bible (unlikely) or
b. She and James Newton got divorced and she remarried.

As you know when she died and where she is buried, I would start by checking the burial registers to see what name she went by.

As regards her parents, is there no record of a Clatworthy/Colwell marriage?

How easy we're divorces in this period and how expensive?

I also have the feeling that my dad's generation of my family would have known.  My Uncle Harry (He's really a first cousin of my dads) knew his granddad, their eldest son, reasonable well but it's certainly a possibility.  His mother was the eldest of her generation and a formidable lady and I think she was in touch with Soloman.
(Saying that my dad never realized, that one of his maiden aunts who used her mothers maiden name was illegitimate,  and she was living with him and his parents when she died.)

If I could find Anne's Marriage I would also feel a sense of achievement. She was baptised on the 25 May 1817.  I did wonder if Martha might have been visiting her mother in 1891 and if I knew her surname I could check for errors in the census.

I doubt that in 1922 she would have been buried in South Molton graveyard as that has been disused for a long time.
She is most likely buried in South Molton Cemetery which was opened in 1858.

You could ask the town council if her name appears in the cemetery register.They should be in the phone book.

Thanks to the 1911 census and a distant cousin we came accross last year we think we have now found Martha's death registration.

Martha seems to have remarried twice after the death of her first Husband.  (he died 1891)
2nd husband Williamm Parker 1894  he died 1894  ( Same quarter? )
3rd husband John leworthy 1905
she then died as we knew in Mar 1922 registered as Leeworthy in exeter  (I have just ordered the death cert)

The famile bible doesn't mention remariages.
