I started work in Whittle-le-Woods more than half a lifetime ago.

Whittle Springs was the site of a brewery until the 1930s, when it was taken over by Matthew Brown of Blackburn. Despite a clause in the contract intended to keep the brewery open, it was immediately closed and the well poisoned. However, until Matthew Brown was forcibly acquired by Scottish & Newcastle in 1987, their soft drinks carried a Whittle Springs brand name.

New Springs can be seen on www.old-maps.co.uk.

Search for Chorley (Lancs & Furness). Press the North button 10 times, then see the Enlarged view. New Springs is on the right hand side. The brewery referred to is down Moss Lane by the side of the canal.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

G'day folks....     I apologise for the late response to Barbara and Stuart,  I have been following up on this.
Thanks Andrew for that info.   this fills a gap,  since the Elephant and Castle at Adlington was held by Lawrence Wilcock,  and in an old Photo it shows that they traded in " Whittle Springs" beer.

I have seen the  " old maps" referred to by Stuart and Andrew,    I am very much convinced that we've found the spot.   This warrants further research, and so if you  have any other info, I would be very pleased to receive it.
I also found the location mentioned by Barbara,  but this just didn't gel,   we had no other links to that area.
Andrew,  these little snippets are priceless.

Hello there! I am from whittle and have only registered with this site because as I googled 'the top lock pub whittle-le-woods' to see if I could find the pub menu your post showed up!!! I'm not 100% sure but I seem to remember being told that the water in whittle springs was thought to be healing water years ago and people with ailments used to travel from all over to bathe in it that maybe why its called 'new springs' I will speak with my mum about it and get back to you with any other info x
