NEW SPRINGS, Whittle le Woods 1790

G'day.......    The Wilcock family had  a property  called NEW SPRINGS  at    Whittle le Woods,  just north of Chorley.      We believe it was a working farm at that time,  but information about it is very hard to come by.
Location ,  or  any general information about this property or this  area  would be greatly appreciated.          Thanks   Brian.

I wonder if your family originally came from New Springs - just outside of Wigan by the canal?   It could account for the name of the property.

I have just spent a pretty frustrating hour trying to get some general info about New Spring,  Wigan,   but without luck.
 I think it's hiding !
If you have any further general info that you think may help in this search,  I would be grateful.      I didn't realise there was such a place.      Thanks for the " heads up".  Brian.

Hi Brian

Have a look for Canal Street or Withington Lane or even Harveys Bakery, they are- or were in New Springs.   It could come under Aspull these days, I'm not sure.  My ex husband came from Canal Street, New Springs, but it's years since I've been there.

As you come out of Wigan, it's on the right hand side going towards  Bolton.   I'll see if I can find a map for you with it on, it is a rather obscure place and they did do a lot of demolition work in the '80's and '90's.

Hi Brian

I've found this site for you, hope it helps.  On ordinary maps, look for the Leeds/Liverpool Canal as this forms a boundary with New Springs.

Hope I've got that right.  Just in case I haven't, try google Wigan+maps and a whole heap come up.

I just put "new springs" into old-maps.co.uk and it shows as being near "top lock", whittle-le-woods in 1849 which is a semi-familiar place to me as i live in Leyland a couple of miles down the road.  Apparently it's still named the same.

If you dont' find any more information, I might be able to pay a visit and get some photo's next weekend... no promises though.

Hi Stuart, there's a 'Top Lock' in New Springs Wigan also.   Makes it a bit confusing doesn't it!!   Top Lock referred to the lock system on the Leeds/Liverpool Canal.  The lock itself was at the top of Cale Lane in New Springs.
