Quite possibly there was an inquest but I'm not sure what records would still be in existence. Perhaps someone could check the inquest register and see if he's listed ?

Phoned Central Library then sent a request email and received this reply

They did say that because of the postal strike they aren't getting any postal enquiries but can't give a reply time.

However if anyone is near to Central Library the registers are on microfilm and on open access and can be searched in person.

Sorry can't help with that bit,  I'm in NW London and don't think I can make it there and back between the school runs  

If not I'll let you know if I get a reply.

Shaun ... if he died in the hospital ... they may have had a post mortem ..... but if he died at home .... probably his own GP signed the death certificate ...... don't you think ?!

Michel .... any chance you can you give us a copy of the death certificate do you think please ? ... I can't remember what it says !!

I don't know what the rules were in those days Annie - it might depend on whether the death was an obvious consequence of injury or illness for which he'd been receiving treatment, or if it was sudden or suspicious.

 Ah! can anyone read cause of death ...as there is a date there for September ..so following an illness! or operation!

Water on the brain because of the tumour ?

Looks as if he had a couple of operations to relieve the pressure on his brain.  poor chap
