Hi Wendi, I'm a long way from home and don't have access to my 1938 Kellys but I recall that "The Cot" is listed there (I mentioned it in an earlier post). Maybe we could deduce its location from its place in Kellys listings for Grange Lane. I can check this when I get home (middle of next week) if still not resolved.

Checking modern listings on the OS "Old Maps" site, there is "The Cottage" in Grange Lane at L25 5JX - which per Streetmap appears to be close to the junction of Grange Lane and Gateacre Brow - could this be "The Cot" I wonder?

Retiringtype...if you look on the Lookup board the request from Kellys directory as already been answered...and just out of interest the estate of R.W.Stead amounted to 1306 hundred and six pounds.

Derek, both the probate record and the 1926 telephone book have Robert Stead at The Cot.  I know there was a habitation called "The Cot" because I found it in 1938 Kellys. The reference in your post (re 1925/6 Kellys on the Lancs Look-Up board) to "The Croft" is a bit of a puzzle. Perhaps they moved to The Cot after being at The Croft.

NB I know about the value of the estate !

Perhaps you are also aware that COT is sometimes an affectionate spelling for "Cottage...take care.

Derek, Indeed - hence my earlier post. If you have the opportunity could you take another look at 1925/6 Kellys  ? It would be interesting to know whether there is an entry for "The Cot" listed in addition to  "The Croft", and whether there is also an entry for "The Cottage".

Sorry..should have thought...just looked in my saved email..the person who sent me the 1926 info...mentions..."The Croft"..but it could also be "The Cot"..he said the print was badly faded but the address..Grange Lane was clear...must admit.. the directory in the library was faded too..take care.
