Morning again ..... I'm dragging a bit this am !!  ;) ;)

I believe Michel has already looked into all the legistics regarding the bracelet and as he already said it was not standard issue ... men bought their own ... !!

RT .........  I'm sorry !  I knew you'd already seen that one name study site ..... what I MEANT to say was ( it was late !! )  - I had gone over it again and as I'm not good with searches ........  ::) I did the directories too and threw up my hands !! .... I'm better with TNA !!  :) :) :)

So ...... if they ask me ... what do I say ? .... can we make some kind of summary of the main points ( highlights ! ) ? ...... if we leave it for them to sort it out from this thread - something may be overlooked !!

Annie  :)

PS  :D :D :D :D Michel ..... you know it takes me a while to read your messages  :) but I think my reply is .....
You're welcome !!

Annie I think you need to start drafting a short paragraph, including parts from Michel's original on the first page.  I have no idea how much detail they would go into but possibly just listing some of the surnames and asking whether they believe anybody would be connected might just grab their attention and encourage them to take a better look.

If you start a draft on here and then others can make suggestions if they wish and you can edit as you go along, how would that be?

Mornin' Annie  :D

I'm really sorry that it would appear that 2nd Lt. Stead, has no direct descendants, however it's great news that The Echo have agreed to publish!!

I'm with Mary, lets get all the surnames in, with more or less as you said on page 1, short and to the point.  You can do that  ;)

Oooo Annie....maybe a way ahead for this now.

I think the article would be a great idea and the early names need to be the ones to look at...The Stead's/ Grant's for sibling rellies ..Dobell and Crease would be worth a mention too.

If these names are around in Liverpool area now some one will spot their family name...Hurst was a second marriage so off a bit and after that it goes backwards not forwards.

Lets go for it like you I am a sucker for things like this..even old postcards I now check out addies and names....

How about if we do something like this ?? !

There's an interesting topic over on Rootschat ( a free genealogy site ) where a French gentleman is looking for descendants of a Machine Gun Corps Second Lieutenant Robert William Stead who came back from WWI to Watford Road in Anfield

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,206958.0.html

His father was William Harley Stead and a group of people have been trying to find the descendents of this soldier

We would appreciate it if you ....... ( we realise you're all busy people  ..... but we're banking on you being "nosy" like us !! ) could take a look and see if there would be anything you could help us with !!

It all started when we got this email from France ....

Quote
25 years ago, when I was General Secretary of the town hall of LA COUTURE, a village between ARMENTIERES and BETHUNE, just on the western front, I found, among old coins and a button of british trench coat, a piece of metal engraved in english.

Since that day, I search in the british cemeteries of my sector the grave of the man (there are many of them near my home)

In fact, with help of members of the forum and of a new friend from minnesota one day I see I mistaked, the man survived the conflict an go back alive at home Watford / Walford Road, Anfield Liverpool

The memory of this men, that I do not know haunt my spirit, my best wish is to restore the wrist tag to his descent, if it exist, that is very very important for me.

Of course, no money in this history, just to be in peace with my soul, this medal is not mine, it must go back in his real place.

Do you think someone is able to take, in a first time few photos of the house of Stead where he goes back after been discharged in 1918 ?

The man in question is ...........

2nd Lt Robert William Stead MGC ... we have a photo of what looks like a dog tag of some sort or a wrist tag with his name and regiment and also he was C of E ..........

we have copies of his service record ...... but would love to be able to give our French friend peace of mind and see if we can get this tag back to it's rightful owners !!

Thanking you in advance

Hi Annie

I played around with the Dobell name at A******y -

George Galloway Dobell born Edmonton ...

1901 census ... visiting  Hornsey (Edmonton) is a Winfred Dobell (this spelling) - she appears to be the 16 year old daughter of Alfred and Ellen of West Kirby.

A while back I mentioned Dobell GC & Co Ltd who had offices, warehouses and a mill in Liverpool and Bootle per 1938 Kellys.

This company also had an office in London W1 per the 1928 London telephone book, where they are described as nitrate soda importers. I haven't looked at any other directories yet

I did a search in A2A and turned up references to the company in Liverpool going back to 1912.

Ah ....there was also a London office for Alfred Dobell & Co timber importers in Arthur Street EC4. And the Alfred Dobell that Linda identified in West Kirby was a timber broker/agent.

So we have two apparently quite separate Dobell companies with links between Liverpool and London.
