There's an interesting Bootle address of her "cousin" in the Will, however, checking the place out on streetmap.co.uk I don't believe it's going to be one house, or even whether it was at that time.  No idea how much free time I'm going to have over the weekend but if there's a chance to travel past there I will see what is there now.

Annie, you talk about who "deserves" Michel's wrist tag, but I've had it pointed out to me that there maybe a legal issue in that it should really belong to the next of kin/beneficiary of the will, regardless of what we feel about it.  Having said that, if we find the next of kin and they aren't interested, I don't suppose they would be bothered what we did with it ie finding somebody who cared about it.

Regarding ownership of the wrist tag, I guess originally it was the property of His Majesty's War Department. It was lost in France, and then found by Michel many years later. It has very little intrinsic value. I don't know what French law would say, but my sense is that it's really Michel's property now, to do with as he wishes.

Mary and retirintype,

I have just read attentively your last messages.

Allow me to bring a small precision to you: it does not seem that the wrist tag to belong to the regulatory equipment provided by HMWE,It seems it was a private purchase carried out by R W STEAD.

In France, and in particular on the westernfront,  thousands, maybe millions of objects belonging to the base at HMWE are preserved by thousands of collectors, tens of museums, as well public as private, without the law French not being occupied any, put aside the weapons and the ammunitions in all kind.

Imagine, just only one moment, that all these objects must turn over to England.

Dear Annie,

I have searched our archive for material relating to  Robert William Stead but unfortunately have found nothing, I have therefore passed your email on to our features department who have agreed to make an appeal in the Liverpool Echo in the hopes of getting some feedback for you. I am sure they will make contact with you shortly and publish the appeal in our paper at their earliest opportunity.
I hope this is to your satisfaction.

Best wishes,

Brian

Michel,

I hope that would be the case, that it was more or less your property.

Great stuff Annie, I hope they run a feature soon !!!  Keep us up to date and when it's in I'll have the article scanned and posted here.
