"At the time of his marriage he lived at 81 Sherborne Street, Birmingham 16, off Broad Street. According to his son Alfred Ernest's birth certificate, he was a "cutter out at tailor's" in July 1880. In the 1881 census he was married, 24, "tailor cutter", living at Broomfield, Harborne, Staffs, wife Clara aged 20, son Alfred Ernest Priestley aged 9 months. In the 1901 census he is aged 44, born in "London Mayfair", occupation "tailor", resident at 129 Aberdeen Street [Winson Green, Birmingham 18]. After his first son Alfred's death, his second son was named Albert Edward known as "Edward" or "Ted". "A tailor cutter from London, his family was from Battersea Rise, where they kept a pub. He played the flute and was fond of garlic" (daughter Alice May Brown née Priestley's recollection]. He later had a hardware shop and house at 344 Lodge Road, Hockley, next to a railway cutting and bridge, from about 1910 (Kelly's Birmingham Trades 1910), but continued to work as a tailor, making suits (he kept his sewing machine under the living room window).
Perhaps some link with this family in 1881, licensed victualler of the South Street Falcon, Edmonton?:

That's all I have, no birth registered on 10 March 1857 acc. to GRO, his birthday and date acc. to Alice May Priestley. A total mystery. Was he born abroad?
Best wishes,
Dennis.
