Horn-Freeland, Cumbernauld
« on: Tuesday 09 January 07 23:43 GMT (UK) »
I'm interested in Robert Horn, married to Helen/Hellin Freeland/Freland/Ireland in Cumbernauld; they had a number of children between 1781-1801
Ruthven Elphinstone Horn 11 March 1781 Cumbernauld (GROS 495/00 0002)
Janet Horn 16 February 1783 Cumbernauld (GROS 495/00 0002)
Margaret 30 January 1785 in Cumbernauld (GROS 495/00 0002)
James Horn 21 June 1789 in Cumbernauld (GROS 495/00 0002)
Robert  6 June 1791 in Cumbernauld (GROS 495/00 0002)
John 5 May 1793 in Cumbernauld (GROS 495/00 0002)
Agnes  10 Dec 1797 (GROS 495/00 0002)
McInzey Horn 1801 (GROS 495/00 002

I believe some of the family may have gone to America. I'd be particularly interested in any information on Robert and Helen's antecedents or any info on the children,
thanks,

Janet

That is interesting, my OH several times Great Grandmother was Jane Freeland Horne, daughter of Thomas and Martha Horne (nee.Brown) in Portsmouth in 1804. Wander if there is a link?

There were quite a few Freelands in Kirkintilloch in the 19th century; I also have a record of a John Freeland who married Marion Horn, they had a son Robert born in Kirkintilloch in 1820, daughter Margaret in 1821, daughter Agnes in 1823 (GROS 498/0040 0041), son Alexander born in 1827, daughter Elizabeth in 1830 , son David Horn Freeland in 1831, son George 1833, Henry 1835 , Jane 1828.
I don't know if these are of any help?

I'm not aware of any Stirling connection; the family were for several generations in Cumbernauld, and certainly my direct ancestor was there at the time of the 1851 census. He moved to Glasgow between 1851-1861. Some of Helen and Robert's family went to America, I think, but not sure which ones. Some did stay and marry in Cumbernauld, I believe.
It could be that Robert had a brother James who married someone from Stirling, but until I can figure out who his parents were, I can't say very much for sure. I can't locate the marriage of Robert and Helen, though I know she appears in records with various spellings of her name (and her name may even have been Mary Helen or Ellen)...

cumbernauld and stirling are not that far apart

who was your direct lead in the family and what information are you willing to share, that might help tie up the family?

I am descended from Robert and Helen's son James, who married Janet Shearer. Most of the info I have is on this line.

The date of the marriage you posted, of a James Horn and Margaret Adam, suggests that he is of the same generation (albeit perhaps a few years younger) than my Robert. However, as I said, I have no info on my Robert's parents or siblings, so don't know how it would be possible to find out if there's a link anywhere. They would be too old (probably dead!) by the time of the 1841 census, to show up there.

An update on this family; I have found a Robert HORN   chr 3 Sept 1738 in Cumbernauld; I don't know if this is the same Robert Horn who married Helen Freeland and had children between 1781-1801 (it would make him quite old, if so: 43 on birth of 1st child, 63 at birth of last).

It may be that I have missed a generation in between somewhere. The parents of Robert Horn born in 1738 were John Horn (chr. 17 Oct. 1708, Cumbernauld) who m. Janet Jarvey (haven't yet found date of that marriage, but they had 5 children (I have their details) born between 1734-1744.

John's parents were John Horn of Cumbernauld who m. Helen Grahame on 20 July 1705 in Kilsyth.

If anyone knows anything that would help me find the link between the Robert b. 1738 and the Robert who married Helen Freeland, I'd be glad  of the help.

Also anyone with anything further on marriage of John Horn & Janet Jarvie, or of the parents of John Horn who married in 1705.

Merry Christmas! :)

Hi, I know this is a pretty old post, but I am a descendent of the mentioned Robert Horn (1738) and Helen Freeland/Ireland, through their Daughter Margaret who Married John Stark.
